Soaring kite sugoroku : rise up the sky

    Rare Books

Reproduction of an ukiyo-e, or wood block print in the form of a kite-themed sugoruko. Sugorukos were popular chutes and ladders type games in Japan, and the game boards and game play often reflected fanciful themes. In this case, the game is a tour of Edo-era kite shapes and themes with the end goal to fly the kite high in the sky. Each square depicts a different kite style with accompanying text describing the kite and stage in the game. The reproduction is presented as a traditional Japanese style book, with accordion leaves. Each game square image is reproduced with a facing page containing a Romanized Japanese (Romaji) and English translation of the original text. The original print is in the collection of Scott Skinner.
