The photographs consist of albumen prints and cabinet card views depicting images of the Gold Hill, Silver City, and Virginia City mining communities in Nevada. Horse teams, mining machinery, horse teams, and miners are captured in daily activities. Annotations found on some of the photographs note Ed C. Swift (horse team owner), Ralph Gillespie (Gold Hill Wagon shop), and Devil's Gate Cut (Silver City). Also included is an image of Gold Hill miners posing for a photograph and in the center is an Asian man dressed in a cook's uniform. Within the group of photographs is a reproduction of the Comstock delegation assembled on January 12, 1864 which includes Mark Twain, Joseph T. Goodman, Steve Gillis, William Claggett, and Jack Simmons.The cabinet cards are attributed to James H. Crockwell.

Image is of four vignettes which depict four common experiences in the life of a miner. The upper left vignette depicts two miners resting with their packs and a stream in the background. The upper right vignette depicts one miner with a pan of gold and the other jumping joyously. The lower left vignette depicts two discouraged miners looking into a large hole they have dug. The lower right vignette depicts two miners trudging toward a village in the distance. "Lith. & Published by Britton & Rey, corner of Montgomery & Commercial Sts. S.F."--text, below image. The number 9 is in the upper right corner, indicating that this image may be part of a series. Paper color: buff.

The Marshall Monument cabinet card

The photograph depicts the 10 foot six inch bronze statue of James W. Marshall (1810-1885) atop a 31 foot high granite monument erected in 1886. Marshall, a millwright to Captain John A. Sutter is credited with being the first Anglo settler to discover gold in Coloma, California at Sutter's Mill in 1848. The verso of the cabinet card contains a printed history of the monument along with the panel inscriptions in gold font against a black background. Also noted in pencil near the right bottom corner, "Hardy 1945."
