Visual Materials
Two cabinet photograph portraits of men connected to Henry Ward Beecher: Theodore Tilton, a poet and former assistant to Beecher who sued him in an adultery scandal in 1874; and Tilton's lawyer, William A. Beach, who attempted to prosecute Beecher in the ensuing trial. The photographs were both taken by Napoleon Sarony in New York. Tilton's portrait was taken between 1866 and 1871 when Sarony was at his 37 Union Square studio, and Beach's portrait was taken after 1871, at Sarony's Broadway studio.
