Manuscripts
The Clarence E. Van Gundy papers contain material related to his education, but consist primarily of material related to mining and his career in the petroleum industry from 1903-1985. Series 1: Education papers consists of Van Gundy's class notes and assignments, while a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley in the 1930s. Included are notebooks, notes, manuscripts, photographs, and specimen samples related to his doctoral research in the Grand Canyon. This series also includes scientific papers produced from his research related to faulting in the eastern part of the Grand Canyon. Series 2: Mining papers consists of analyses of various oil fields and individual wells scattered throughout California; also included are core report samples, expenses, memorandums, technical drawings, logging reports, and a plethora of maps, many of them manuscripts or heavily annotated. The mining papers are arranged in the following manner: state - county or valley - area, district, or field (if available). Material in the two sub-series may be related, for example material in subseries 1 may reference memorandums that investigate heavy minerals in the San Joaquin Valley in subseries 2. Although the papers are heavily focused on California, there is also material related to other states.

Photograph Album from Charles F. Lummis to Susanita Del Valle

The photograph album chronicles Charles F. Lummis's time with the Del Valle family at Rancho Camulos in Ventura County, California, from 1887 to 1888. There are many photographs of the Del Valle family, particularly the Del Valle daughters, with whom Lummis is shown playfully interacting. Family gatherings include a local Catholic priest, couples dancing, and young women playing instruments. Views of Rancho Camulos, the surrounding landscape, and architectural features such as the placita, the chapel, and the south veranda, are also prominently featured. The front cover of the photograph album bears the embossed title of "Susanita Del Valle," while the spine's title says, "Views of Camulos." An inscription on the third page reads: "Susanita Del Valle, with the best wishes of Chas. F. Lummis—Feb. 3, 1888." Some of the pictures appear in The Home of Ramona: Photographs of Camulos, the Fine Old Spanish Estate Described by Mrs. Helen Hunt Jackson, as the Home of "Ramona," by Charles F. Lummis, published in Los Angeles in 1888. The Huntington Library holds a copy of this book (RB 35644) as well as a second edition (RB 252770). Both copies are illustrated with original cyanotypes by Lummis, many of which are in The Home of Ramona.

This collection contains 269 stereographs by photographer Carleton E. Watkins, dating from the 1860s to about the 1880s, that chiefly depict buildings, points of interest, and locales in Northern and Southern California. The collection includes 1 stereograph from the Central Pacific Railroad series; 5 stereographs from Watkins' Pacific Railroad Series; 110 stereographs from Watkins' Pacific Coast series; and 150 stereographs from Watkins' New Series. The Watkins' Pacific Coast Series, created between 1861 and 1874, primarily depict locales in Northern California with many images of buildings in San Francisco, views of Yosemite and Mariposa County, Missions, and some mining operations including photographs of the North Bloomfield Gravel Mining Company in Nevada County, California. The Watkins' New Series stereographs, created between 1874 and 1890, consist of images of both Southern California and Northern California, in cities including San Francisco, Pasadena, San Marino, Sierra Madre, and San Gabriel. Among the Southern California residences and properties depicted include the Sunny Slope Ranch of L.J. Rose in San Gabriel, Willow Dale owned by N.C. Carter, and Lake Vineyard owned by B.D. Wilson. Some of the stereographs in Watkins' Pacific Coast Series include titles in the margins in Watkins' own hand (see Nos. 1033, 1135, 1146, 1153, and 1721).

A collection of 19 photographs by I.W. Taber showing views of California, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Monterey, Santa Barbara, Yosemite, and the San Gabriel Valley. Some of the photographs show street scenes, others are focused on hotels, mountains, missions, vineyards, orange groves, and mountains. Eighteen of the photographs are by I. W. Taber, with the remaining one image by H. E. Mathews and published by Taber (Item 10).
