Note originally with this item (now missing) read: "Daguerreotype of, as young man, Aldridge Worthington, passenger on steamer 'Independence' wrecked off the coast of [Margarita, Venezuela], 1853. 200 people drowned. He swam a mile to land with this Bible in his pocket. Descendant of Dr. David Marchand." Research shows that this is Joseph Aldridge Worthington (1835-1894). Date based on years of major usage of daguerreotypes.
