Description: Photographs and ephemera from a disbound album chiefly related to Dawson City and the Yukon territory in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which was presumably compiled by Dawson City grocer J.H. Ahlert. Photographs depict the Klondike Gold Rush and include images of mining camps, prospectors, mountain passes including the Chilkoot Pass, rivers, dog sleds, and the streets, businesses, and inhabitants of Dawson City. The photographs primarily consist of commercial photographs (chiefly 16.5 x 21.5 cm) signed on the negatives by Larss & Duclos of Dawson. Notably, item 33 is an image of the Larss & Duclos photograph studio building in Dawson with the photographers standing in front with a camera on a dog sled. Additional identified photographers include E.A. Hegg, E.O. Ellingsen, W.P. Kelly, Draper & Co., Case & Draper, the Lomen Bros. and Ordway. There are also two color prints of elevated views of Dawson, presumably from the 1930s-1940s. The collection also includes pieces of ephemera related to J.H. Ahlert including printed business letterhead and bills for the Ahlert & Forsha grocery business in Dawson; Ahlert's Canadian customs pass; booklets and programs related to the Yukon Masons; and a handbill listing the gold scale used in Dawson City. Also included is an envelope and luggage tags identifying the family members as they travelled from Yukon Territory to their address in Pasadena, California.

Bound photograph album containing 49 black-and-white snapshots documenting a trip by Alfred and Charles O'Meara in May-August 1899 from Skagway, Alaska, into the Yukon Territory, Canada, to their gold mining claim sites at Last Chance Creek, thirty miles from Dawson City. Each image is accompanied by a descriptive handwritten caption chronicling the trip. The images depict landscapes; travel by foot, mule, and canoe; camping; rivers; steamships; town sites; and mining and mining sites. Depicted locations include: the Dyea Trail; Chilkoot Pass; Lindermann Lake; Lake Bennett; Bennett City; Taglish Lake, Marsh Lake, Lake Lebarge; Hootalinqua Station; the Bib Salmon River Police Station; Lewes River; Fort Selkirk; Yukon River; Stewart City; Dawson City; and Last Chance Creek. Some notable photographs include a photograph of the wooden tracks of the tramway at Miles Canyon (No. 25); a boat on White Horse Rapids (No. 30); the wreck of the steamer Domville (No. 37); and the Steamer Golden Star (No. 39).

Manuscripts

This collection primarily consists of letters from Edwin Nicholas Welter as he worked and traveled throughout Alaska and the Yukon and from Stuart Jackson Welter as he mined for gold in Nevada. Much of their correspondence is addressed to their family, especially to their sister, Gene Welter Beyette and her daughter, Karyn B. Sanders.

Manuscripts

This small group consists of the letters George E. Pilz to James Jerome Smith, who employed Pilz to secure profitable mining claims in Alaska and the Yukon Territory. These letters contain descriptions of Pilz's work as well as descriptions of the conditions under which he lived in Juneau, Alaska and Dawson, Yukon. Additionally there is the prospectus of the Harrisburg Consolidated Mill and Mining Company of Alaska (HM 66217)

Visual Materials

A disbound album with suede covers containing several studio portraits of women and some snapshots of children and family groups, mostly unidentified. The majority of photographs date from the early 1900s, with a few photographs at the back dating to the 1940s or 1950s (two are dated 1954). The unidentified compiler of the album most likely attended Girls' High School, San Francisco, as there are two portraits of women with captions: "Alice Marchebout, Latin teacher, G.H.S. 1902" and one unnamed female "Greek teacher. G.H.S." (Marchebout is listed as a teacher at Girls' High School in the 1900 San Francisco City Directory.) There are two portraits by professional photographers based in San Francisco: William E. Dassonville and George F. Kelly.
