Description: An album of 119 photographs from the United States Military Academy, including individual and group portraits, campus views, and building interiors. The first part of the album contains portraits of older men in uniforms and suits and portraits of 4th year cadets in various uniforms. The remainder of the album includes pictures of building interiors and exteriors on the campus, such as the library, dining hall, and chapel; group photographs of cadets from different years, some with women; and views of cadets in formation on the parade grounds. Portrait subjects are unidentified.

Kawakami family photograph album

Visual Materials

A photograph album depicting a Japanese American family in California in the pre-internment period, along with portraits of Japanese family members. There isn't any writing in the album, but one photograph is inscribed "To Mr. S. Kawakami," who may be the compiler. The album begins with formal portraits of family groups in traditional Japanese dress that were most likely taken in Japan. A photograph of a young child laid into the album has Japanese printing on it, and there are a few pressed flowers in the album. Other images show Japanese Americans in California, including the University of California, Berkeley campus; a large group in front of the Berkeley Buddhist Temple on Channing Way, Berkeley; Ocean Park Pier in Santa Monica; downtown Los Angeles; Santa Barbara Mission; and San Francisco. Three images depict a sumo wrestling match that may have taken place in California.

Photograph album of U.S. Army camp and military parades in Northern California

Visual Materials

An album of 44 photographs mounted on heavy boards with several images related to soldiers based in Northern California around 1898. The album begins with views of Boulder Creek and the town of Ben Lomond in the Santa Cruz Mountains, followed by views of San Francisco, including the Cliff House (the second building, which was built in 1896), the Ferry Building and ferries in the bay, and a military parade of soldiers marching down a city street in San Francisco. There are several bird's-eye-views of an unidentified U.S. Army camp with tents, fort buildings, and images of soldiers drilling, probably in the San Francisco Bay area. Another patriotic military parade is shown in a small town, with a replica of the battleship Maine (which was sunk in 1898), American flags, bicyclists, and children dressed as sailors. The back of the album contains family photographs with portraits of women in long dresses posed inside a house, and an older couple outside a gingerbread style Victorian house with a garden.

Photograph album of automobile road trips across the United States and into Mexico

Visual Materials

An album of 296 snapshot photographs documenting two excursions by automobile across the United States and into Mexico in the late 1930s by a group of young men who appear to have been students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, Massachusetts. The first trip, in July and August of 1937, includes numerous scenes in Washington, D.C., Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, Mexico, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Utah, Wyoming, and New York. Their travels involved stops at the Tennessee Valley Authority power station at Muscle Shoals, Alabama; Carlsbad Caverns National Park; Grand Canyon National Park; Boulder Dam; Death Valley; Sequoia and Yosemite national parks; Yellowstone National Park; and Niagara Falls. In Mexico, they toured the capital and saw a bullfight. The majority of photographs have handwritten captions in white pencil describing locations. Other images depict collegiate sports, including track and golf, and some mountain climbing. Another western excursion in 1938 includes visits to the Royal Gorge of the Arkansas, Colorado locations, and another visit to Yosemite National Park. The remaining photographs consist of views of the WPI campus, the destructive impact of the 1938 New England hurricane, and stops at unidentified hydroelectric engineering sites.

Photographic portrait album of United States Naval Academy personnel and USS Constitution crew

Visual Materials

An album with 15 carte-de-visite studio portraits of officers and midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy and USS Constitution. Among the officers and crew included are Naval Academy Superintendent George Smith Blake, Edward P. Lull, Charles L. Huntington, and USS Constitution boatswain's mate Thomas ("Old Tom") Hunter, midshipmen Bowman H. McCalla (entered the Academy in 1861, graduated November 1864), Charles H. Stockton (entered 1861, graduated October 1865), C.P. Griswold, and L.M. Albright. The album includes handwritten labels loosely inserted into some of the frames, often with the names and hometowns of other midshipmen. The frame on page 2 is empty and contains an inserted paper strip labeled "Henry Ward Beecher, Brooklyn, New York." The album is inscribed on the title page in the same hand as the paper labels "From George to Mary".

Visual Materials

An album with 66 photographs of various locations in New York State and the Western United States, including California, Washington, Texas, and Arizona. Images of New York include the New York City harbor, Battery Park, the Flatiron Building, Thousand Islands, the town of Clayton, and the city of Ogdensburg. Views of the Western states include street scenes in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California; the Cascade Range of mountains; an "Indian Fair" in the city of Toppenish and other places in the Yakama (also spelled Yakima) Indian Reservation in Washington; the city of San Antonio in Texas; and the Mojave Desert in Arizona. There are also single views of the Southern Pacific Railroad, the Northern Pacific Railway, and New Orleans.
