Photograph album of U.S. Army camp and military parades in Northern California

    Visual Materials

An album of 44 photographs mounted on heavy boards with several images related to soldiers based in Northern California around 1898. The album begins with views of Boulder Creek and the town of Ben Lomond in the Santa Cruz Mountains, followed by views of San Francisco, including the Cliff House (the second building, which was built in 1896), the Ferry Building and ferries in the bay, and a military parade of soldiers marching down a city street in San Francisco. There are several bird's-eye-views of an unidentified U.S. Army camp with tents, fort buildings, and images of soldiers drilling, probably in the San Francisco Bay area. Another patriotic military parade is shown in a small town, with a replica of the battleship Maine (which was sunk in 1898), American flags, bicyclists, and children dressed as sailors. The back of the album contains family photographs with portraits of women in long dresses posed inside a house, and an older couple outside a gingerbread style Victorian house with a garden.

    Photograph album (disbound)

    Visual Materials

A collection of 63 Civil War photographs compiled by John P. Nicholson, Civil War veteran and collector. The albumen photographs are mounted on boards and were bound into an album (now disbound). Most are undated and have little identifications, though some have faded pencil writing on back. Many images depict battlefields, primarily in Gettysburg, such as Little Round Top, Devil's Den, and others. Of particular note are photographs of war dead on the battlefield by Mathew B. Brady and Timothy O'Sullivan (1863); and an image of a dead young man, labeled a "rebel sharpshooter," by Alexander Gardner. Another image shows Brady overlooking "The Wheat Field" at Gettysburg, July 1863, attributed to Egbert Guy Fowx. There are several group portraits of soldiers and officers, often at camp, sitting or standing in front of tents; one features officers with women, presumably their wives or family members. Those identified include General Francis Preston Blair Jr. and staff; soldiers of the 8th New York State Militia at camp; 1st U.S. Cavalry at Brandy Station, Virginia; musical band of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry (Zouaves); and artillery of the Army of the Cumberland near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Other subjects are: General George G. Meade's headquarters; men building fortifications; a government coal wharf; the Orange and Alexandria Railroad roundhouse in Alexandria, Virginia; a bird's-eye-view of Washington, D.C. with the Capitol and Smithsonian Institute Building "The Castle"; and a panoramic image of "the field over which Pickett charged" by photographer William Bell. A few images include Black men in civilian clothing. The album is disbound, and three photographs have been matted and housed in Box 2.

Photograph album of a Japanese American soldier in the U.S. occupation forces in Japan

    Visual Materials

A personal photo album compiled and annotated by a Japanese American serviceman who served in the U.S. occupation forces during the post-World War II occupation of Japan. The album begins with his departure from Hawaii to Japan in 1946, including one image of his old school, McKinley High School in Honolulu. In Tokyo, there are many photographs of fellow soldiers, as well as Japanese young men and women; buildings and landmarks; parks; and army buildings. Two images of a large building are described as General Douglas MacArthur's headquarters in Tokyo, and there is one image of him walking out of the building. Besides Tokyo, the soldier is seen in Kamakura and Otake, near Iwakuni, where he may have been stationed later. Of note are a few images of building destruction in Hiroshima, 1947, in the aftermath of the atomic bombing. At the back of the album are many single and group portraits of Japanese residents, possibly family members or acquaintances in Iwakuni and Otake. The album has handwritten captions in English, with occasional captions written in Japanese.
