  Photograph and scrapbook album of women's trip to Mexico

  A travel album of photographs, ephemera and typescript narrative, documenting a car trip taken by four Texas women to Mexico and back in August and September 1938. Typed diary pages are pasted on several album pages detailing the people and places the women encountered and the experiences they had. The photographs include snapshots of residents, towns and villages, ancient temples, churches and convents, with some images of the four women who are only identified as Elizabeth, Juanita, "Sister," and M.S. They are seen with their guide, "Mr. Castillo," on a riverboat in Xochimilco in Mexico City, and also traveling by car in the mountains and countryside. Comments in the narrative discuss the use of travel conveniences such as Western Union and Wells Fargo, having to speak Spanish, the activities of indigenous peoples, and scenic wonders. The album is bound in wooden covers and has a carved illustration depicting a rural Mexican scene, most likely purchased on the trip. Also included in the album are photographic postcards, menus, brochures, and other ephemera collected from the trip.

  Bell family photograph albums of travel in the American West

  A collection of 10 family photograph albums, 1908-1924, chiefly of trips to tourist sites and national parks in the Western United States, depicting travel by car, mountain camping, natural scenery, and hiking. Little is known about the Bell family, but most of the snapshots have captions identifying locations and dates. One album says photographs by J. O. Downing, and there is a postcard album with postcards sent from all over the country, approximately 1910s. Album contents: Vol. 1. Sierra Club trip, Glacier National Park, 1924 -- Vol. 2.   Photograph album of Barbara Hartman's automobile travels across the United States

  A travel album of approximately 500 snapshots and a few lithographic cards and commercially-produced photographs, compiled by a young woman named Barbara Hartman who lived in Seattle and possibly the Los Angeles area. The photographs are annotated with neatly-written captions that contain identifications and recollections of multiple automobile trips across the American West, to the East Coast and to the South in the years 1946-1949. The album documents ski trips to Snoqualmie Pass, Washington; nature and wildlife in Oregon and Wyoming; excursions to Glacier National Park and a stay at Many Glacier Hotel; the French Quarter, New Orleans; Miami and the Florida Keys; the Mammoth Caves, Kentucky; Washington D.C.; Mount Vernon; Philadelphia; New York City; Chiricahua National Monument and the town of Hayden, Arizona; the redwoods of Northern California; several popular tourist destinations in Southern California (including a visit to the Huntington Library); and repeat visits to a mountain cabin in Lake Arrowhead, California. A couple of different young women, identified only by first names, and sometimes her parents and others are pictured on trips with Barbara, who presumably took most of the photographs. There are scenes of large family gatherings and some trips to relatives' houses in different parts of the country. Photographs at the beginning of the album show Barbara and other young women outside a house in Seattle with their cats; she is also pictured ice skating with friends in Chicago and on jaunts with other women to New York City and Boston. Other scenes of note include a tour of antebellum plantation homes in Natchez, Mississippi; the Date Festival in Indio, California; and two women posing in a tourist "Tijuana jail" photo booth. This album provides a rich visual representation of automobile touring in postwar America and the experiences of women travelers.

  A photograph album of tourists sightseeing in Mexico, including Mazatlan, Ruiz (Nayarit), Mexico City, Guadalupe, Xochimilco, Cuernevaca, and Tasco. Images show street scenes, markets, churches and monasteries, a bullfight, the pyramids at Teotihuacan, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes, and the Desert of the Lions (Desierto de los Leones).

  Philippine American War photograph albums

  Four photograph albums containing a total of 218 images (chiefly 4.5 x 6.5 inches) of the Philippine American War, taken by an unidentified photographer most likely associated with the 19th U.S. infantry stationed in Cebu, Philippines. Primarily in Cebu with some in San Nicolas and elsewhere, the images document Filipino life and culture as well as U.S. soldiers in military activities and recreation. Three photographs depict the refueling of a hospital ship in Hong Kong, and there are also images of the recruitment of Indigenous soldiers in Puerto Rico, and rare views of the surrenders of Filipino generals Mateo Noriel Luga and Aguedo del Rosario. The photographs are captioned and numbered continuously throughout the four albums. The first album, images 1 to 54, contains mostly detailed panoramas (3.5 x 12 inches) of Cebu and its port, plaza, and bay. The second album, images 55 to 109, contains a range of subjects including the 19th Infantry band baseball team, Filipino homes and families, elaborate Holy Day celebrations in San Nicolas, and several photographs of insurgents and their surrenders. The third album, images 111 to 165, includes church interiors, street and market scenes, and a family identified as "Spaniard and Filipino Mixed Family." The fourth album, images 166 to 218, includes several scenes from the 19th Infantry's training in Michigan, prior to their arrival in the Philippines; interior shots of Colonel Edward J. McClernand's home; a church procession in the streets of Cebu; and the deportation of prisoners to Guam. Some writing in the album reflects racist views toward Filipino and Chinese people.

  Photograph album of groups of Civil War veterans at battlefield sites, and related images

  An album of photographs of groups of people gathered for reunions and commemorations of the Civil War, chiefly in the 1880s. The album contains albumen prints, 7 x 9 inches, mounted on board, with no handwriting or identifications, though many are at Gettysburg. Some groups are posed at battlefield monuments that reveal locations, such as one at Little Round Top, and another of five veterans posed with historian John B. Bachelder at the 29th Ohio Infantry Monument, Gettysburg. Men are often wearing badges or ribbons with a star, and sometimes military hats. A few women also appear in the groups. Two photographs depict crowds gathered to hear a speaker on a platform, and another shows a group standing in front of a tree posted with a sign reading "Here is where Gen. Reynolds was killed, July 1, 1863." Identified photographers are: P. S. Weaver (view of a group on Culp's Hill at Gettysburg), W. H. Tipton, Rile, and Rile & Kerns. Two mounted photographs by Mathew Brady, 1862, were laid in the album: "No. 207. Soldiers' Graves at Bull Run" and "No. 237. Ruins at Manassas." The Brady images and two others loose from the album are housed in Box 2.
