  Photograph Album of California Missions and Catholic Churches

  Visual Materials

  This photograph album is made up of early 20th century photographs of eight California missions, in both ruined and repaired states. The missions that are depicted in the album are San Luis Rey, Santa Ines, San Fernando Rey, San Miguel, San Francisco Dolores, San Luis Obispo, San Gabriel, San Juan Capistrano, and San Carlos Borromeo. Other photographs also show San Antonio de Pala Asistencia, the Church of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels (also known as Plaza Church), and the Royal Presidio Chapel. Two photographs depict people alongside the missions: photograph (8) shows people going into the Mission San Francisco de Asís and photograph (15) shows two Native American children at Mission San Fernando Rey. One photograph of particular interest is that of a group of Native American school children with three Catholic nuns, who presumably may be their teachers. They are standing in front of an unidentified church building. Some of the photographs are faded or are peeling off the album pages and are bent. Charles Ironmonger is the only photographer that has been identified as a contributor to this album; no other photographers have not been identified, and the compiler of this album is unknown.

  Abraham Lincoln photograph album

  Visual Materials

  A photographic album with 59 images showing the places where Abraham Lincoln lived in Illinois and Kentucky. The towns and cities featured include Elizabethtown, Kentucky; Hodgensville, Kentucky; Lincoln City, Indiana; Petersburg, Illinois; Springfield, Illinois; and Chicago, Illinois. Most of the photographs show the exteriors of buildings, with a few interior views, particularly of Lincoln's house in Springfield, Illinois. A manuscript letter from compiler Albert C. Grier to Milwaukee Lincolniana collector John E. Burton, attached to the rear pastedown, explains how the album was assembled.

  Photograph album of Southern California

  Visual Materials

  This bound photograph album contains amateur snapshots depicting life in Southern California in the late 1890s. The compiler appears to have been a schoolteacher, and there are several views of school houses (the Los Angeles Normal School and the Lamanda Park schoolhouse), shots of the interior of an elementary school classroom and class, and outings with schoolchildren. There are also images of Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations, camping in the local mountains (including the Echo Mountain trolley), and at the beaches and various cities such as downtown Los Angeles, Pasadena, Redondo, San Gabriel, Lamanda Park, and Catalina. There is a series of views depicting Redondo, California, including beach cottages, the local casino, tent camping, and Biona [Ballona ?] Bay. There are also two images depicting a Chinese vegetable seller and butcher with their delivery wagons. The first part of the album contains handwritten captions.

  Family photograph album with many portraits of women, (bulk 1902-1910)

  A disbound album with suede covers containing several studio portraits of women and some snapshots of children and family groups, mostly unidentified. The majority of photographs date from the early 1900s, with a few photographs at the back dating to the 1940s or 1950s (two are dated 1954). The unidentified compiler of the album most likely attended Girls' High School, San Francisco, as there are two portraits of women with captions: "Alice Marchebout, Latin teacher, G.H.S. 1902" and one unnamed female "Greek teacher. G.H.S." (Marchebout is listed as a teacher at Girls' High School in the 1900 San Francisco City Directory.) There are two portraits by professional photographers based in San Francisco: William E. Dassonville and George F. Kelly.

  1.1 Photograph Albums

  This subseries contains nine photograph albums with many views of Native Americans; baskets and basket collections; Grace Nicholson's store and home in Pasadena, California; and images of Nicholson and others. Albums A-F consist of six albums with approximately 500 photos each, mostly documenting Grace Nicholson's six basket-collecting trips between 1902 and 1912 to Native American communities of the Northwest Coast, California, and Southwest. The photographs are black-and-white prints, mostly 3 x 4 inches, pasted in albums measuring 11 1/4 x 15 inches, with many captions in Nicholson's handwriting. Albums G-I are smaller volumes and consist of a volume of 25 commercial photographs of Indians (Album G); a volume with 25 photographs of Grace Nicholson's first collecting trip to Ukiah and Northern California in 1903 (Album H); and a volume of 29 photographs of various Native Americans made by an unknown compiler and later acquired by Grace Nicholson (Album I).
