Fletcher depicting various decorated horse-drawn floats and participants in the La Fiesta de Los Angeles parade in Los Angeles, California, circa 1895 and 1896. Includes images of floats for the cities of Pasadena and Fresno, the Board of Trade, the East Side Chemical Engine Company No. 3, the Mt. Lowe Railway (with the Anchor Laundry at 719 S. Los Angeles St. in the background), a view of a Chinese dragon, and other flower-bedecked carriages with participants, including groups of women with parasols and one with a banner labeled "Mexico 1800." There is also a picture of a woman standing on a horse.

9 cabinet cards depicting decorated floats moving through the streets of Los Angeles, California, for the La Fiesta de Los Angeles parade in 1895 and 1896, including images of horse-drawn coaches and wagons decorated with flowers and carrying participants, often groups of women with parasols. Parade floats include one holding children wearing long beards and dressed in traditional Chinese costume; a scene of Spanish mission bells; and another includes an equestrian on horseback. Photographs accompanied by a metal pin engraved with the text "La Fiesta 1896" and a scene of a float, a sombrero labeled "Los Angeles" and two shaking hands.

This collection of William H. Fletcher commercial card photographs focus mainly on Los Angeles, California, during a period of industrial expansion and population growth in the late 1800s. The images depict various views around Los Angeles, which include Los Angeles Street and some of its intersections, the Main and Spring Streets junction, Old Chinatown, the College of Medicine at University of Southern California (in its second incarnation on Buena Vista Street, now North Broadway), Llewellyn Iron Works, Elysian Park, the Hollenbeck Home for retirees, and what may be William H. Fletcher's residence (see item 6). Also included are photographs of Colorado Boulevard, Fair Oaks Avenue, and Devil's Gate in Pasadena; the Los Angeles River; the Hotel Arcadia in Santa Monica; the Point Fermin Lighthouse in San Pedro; Ventura; Redondo Beach; and the California missions San Luis Rey, San Juan Capistrano, and San Fernando Rey.

Los Angeles – La Fiesta de Los Angeles

Visual Materials

A collection of approximately 1,500 photographs and various ephemera and publications of California missions, collected by Southern California educator Connie Rothstein, with an emphasis on the San Gabriel Mission, the history of the city of San Gabriel, and the production of "The Mission Play" by John Steven McGroarty. The collection also includes late-19th and early-20th century photographs of Los Angeles and Southern California, and postcards and ephemera related to the Southern California region. Notable in the collection are 391 stereographs of missions and Los Angeles, including some by photographers William Godfrey and H. T. Payne, A. C. Varela, and Carleton Watkins. All of the California Missions are represented in the collection, plus the "sub-missions" or Asistencias of California. The mission photographs include many unusual views and details, and are a mixture of snapshots made by tourists and commercial photographs. There are many views in and around Southern California, most dating from 1880s-1920s, by various photographers. Specific topics emphasized in and around Los Angeles are: Olvera Street, Chinatown, La Fiesta de Los Angeles celebration; and the Mount Lowe Railway. There are many cabinet cards and stereographs, and six large panoramic photographs of the Los Angeles area. The ephemera include hundreds of postcards and photographic postcards, scrapbooks, and many small publications on the history of the missions and California, as well as ephemera related to "The Mission Play." Other topics in the collection are: photographs and ephemera of Monterey, California; Oregon and the Columbia River Highway; and a group of photographs of cowboys and Western culture (mid-20th century).

Collection of 53 glass plate negatives and corresponding copy prints by photographer W.H. Fletcher of views in Southern California during a period of industrial expansion and population growth primarily in the late 1800s. The images chiefly depict downtown Los Angeles, San Pedro and Terminal Island, and Long Beach. The views of Los Angeles include commercial streets and storefronts, construction sites including the building for Hamburgers Department Store (circa 1907), Main Street and the Church of Our Lady, and views of the town from 5th and Beaudry. The views of San Pedro and Terminal Island include the town of San Pedro, the harbor and docks with moored ships, and the hotel and bathhouse on Terminal Island. The views of Long Beach include the pier and beach, commercial streets and storefronts and residences. In addition there is a view of a miner washing gold in San Gabriel Canyon (Item 48); rural Duarte (Item 49); a street in Pomona (Item 50); a street in Riverside (Item 51); a view of the Point Fermin lighthouse (Item 52); and a view of oak trees (Item 53).

Visual Materials

A view of 6 horses bedecked in white blankets and plumes held by costumed men pulling a float that says, "Chamber of Commerce/ To the prosperity of Southern California" In front of the float are two boys carrying banners that say, Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce." The float is in the shape of a Greek temple.
