Description: Views along the Kuskowim River, Bethel, Nushagak, Togiak, Ounalaska and Bethel. Photographs of Eskimos, traders, trading posts, churches and buildings of these areas. Some very interesting "Before and After" shots of Eskimos with regard to the "civilizing" influence of Christianity. Portraits of Edith Kilbuck, one of the missionaries, and her children.

Photographs in Alaska are by Canadian missionary and Weinland associate Henry Hartmann, William H. Weinland, and commercial photographer M. Lorenz. Many of the southern California images are by William Weinland. Section A: Grand Canyon and the Navahopi Road (Items 1-74)

This collection contains photographs of Elizabeth Compton Hegemann's travels through the Navajo Indian Reservation and the Grand Canyon from 1922 to 1934. It also documents Southwest Indian life and archaeological monuments during Hegemann's career based at the Shonto Trading Post. The most notable images depict Hegemann; United States National Park Service rangers; Fred Harvey Trading Company sites and employees; Navajo and Hopi Indians; trading posts; Charles F. Lummis; the Grand Canyon; various ruins of Indian pueblos; Hopi ceremonies; Navajo horse races; and natural rock formations scattered throughout Arizona
