    Collection of photographs illustrating places mentioned in the works of Charles Dickens

    Visual Materials

    A collection of 127 photographs depicting places throughout England featured in the writings of Charles Dickens as they appeared in approximately 1890 to approximately 1910. Most of the photographs feature the exteriors of buildings in London, Rochester, Canterbury, Dover, Kent, and Portsmouth. The buildings include shops, residences, rooming houses, inns and hotels, cathedrals, churches, abbeys, and a castle. There are multiple photographs of Rochester Cathedral, Canterbury Cathedral, and Gray's Inn. The majority of the photographs depict locations in Dickens's novels. Handwritten captions on the verso reference the work's title and occasionally the chapter in which the place appears.The novels represented are Bleak House (no. 1-11); David Copperfield (no. 12-23); Great expectations (no. 24-25); Little Dorrit (no. 26-30); Martin Chuzzlewit (no. 31-44); The mystery of Edwin Drood (no. 45-64); Nicholas Nickleby (no. 66-67); Oliver Twist (no. 68-74); and Pickwick papers (no. 76-78). There is also a group of photographs depicting locations in the "Tramps" chapter of Dickens's The uncommercial traveler (no. 79-84), as well as locations where Dickens himself stayed during his writing and travels (no. 86-121).

    Collection of photographs depicting scenes and places associated with Charles Dickens's The Pickwick papers

    A collection of 190 photographs depicting scenes and locations throughout England featured in The Pickwick papers, by Charles Dickens, as they appeared in approximately 1890 to approximately 1910. Many photographs show lively street scenes. Exterior and interior views are depicted and some unexpected views such as Stonehenge are included. Approximately 30 images are reproductions of illustrations or maps, including a photograph of a "Map of the six Pickwickian tours" (no. 186). Miscellaneous items include: William Glyde Wilkins's "Pickwickian" bookplate (no. 193); Charles van Noorden, "the well-known Dickens student and writer in his sanctum in Lincoln Inn Fields" (no. 194); and a hand-drawn map in pencil and ink (no. 195). Photographs numbered 1-148 are captioned in ink on the recto and reference the chapter in which the scene appeared; photographs numbered 149-192 are captioned variously on the back in pencil and usually reference a chapter in The Pickwick papers.

    Portraits of Charles Dickens

    Manuscripts

    A collection of drawings, etchings, prints, and watercolors originally part of a bound volume; the material is related to Charles Dickens, his life, and some of the characters from his books, including "Nicholas Nickleby," "The Old Curiosity Shop," "Oliver Twist," and "The Pickwick Papers." Also included are drawings of Dickens and his wife, Catherine Dickens, and their visit to America in 1842. The material was created by various artists including Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), George Cattermole, George Cruikshank, Daniel Maclise, Joseph Kenny Meadows, Pierre Morand, Frederick Sem, and Sir Leslie Ward ("Spy"). Also included is the original separated binding.

    Charles Dickens collection

    Manuscripts

    A collection of letters, manuscripts, and ephemera related to Charles Dickens. The majority of the material is written by Dickens and covers the most productive years of his writing career. The letters are written from Devonshire Terrace, Broadstairs, and Tavistock House, as well as letters from various cities in England, Europe, and America. The collection also includes letters by Dickens' family members, friends, and business associates; there is also one forgery (mssHM 18751) and many of the letters include envelopes. Correspondents in the collection include, among others, Maria Beadnell, Hablot Knight Browne, George Cruikshank, Frederick Dickens, Georgina Hogarth, Charles Kent, William Charles Macready, Thomas Mitton, Frederic Ouvry, Richard Watson, Livinia Jane Watson, William Henry Wills, and the publisher Chapman and Hall. The collection also includes a small amount of ephemera.

    Collection of Howard Edwards Huntington family photographs

    Visual Materials

    A collection of 80 photographs centered around the Howard Edwards Huntington family, including portraits of his mother, Mary Alice Prentice Huntington, her siblings, and her parents, Edwin D. Prentice and Clarissa "Clara" Stoddard. There is one portrait of Henry Edwards Huntington, sitting at a desk, approximately 1890s. Other images are: snapshots of the Howard Huntington family in groups; portraits of Howard and Leslie Thayer Green Huntington and their children; and images of Howard's granddaughter Wendy Lee Huntington as a child. There are a few photographs of Howard's sister Marian Huntington (1883-1973) at different ages, and several snapshots of unidentified children and adults (possibly including James R. Brehm). Three photographic postcards are included, with correspondence from Marian Huntington and Leslie Green Huntington. The collection includes two pieces of ephemera: a memorial leaflet for Howard Edwards Huntington, 1922, and the birth certificate for his son, Henry E. "Ted" Huntington II (1921-1978). There is one cabinet card photograph of Princess Clara Huntington Hatzfeldt with two other women by Carleton Watkins, and two studio portraits by photographer George Steckel.
