  Photographic Travel Album of the Southern and Western United States

  Visual Materials

  This personal album features artistically-composed photographs of often-visited sights and scenery from Louisiana to the Western United States. The photographs were taken by an unknown photographer, and were beautifully printed and mounted, with hand-lettered ink captions. Thirty-six of the forty-nine photographs are of California cities, landmarks or landscapes, but there are also views of New Orleans, Texas, and Arizona. This collection includes photographs of Missions San Gabriel, San Juan Capistrano; San Fernando, Santa Barbara, San Miguel, and Carmel; Chinatown in San Francisco; Golden Gate Park; Mt. Tamalpais; Hotel Potter in Santa Barbara; Los Angeles; Long Beach; Avalon Bay in Santa Catalina Island; Riverside, California; Ocean Park; and Rancho Camulos. Of note are two photos at the Santa Barbara Mission that include clergy posed in the scenes. Other California locations include Redlands, Riverside and city scenes in San Francisco. There are views of buildings in New Orleans; the Alamo (San Antonio, Texas); San Xavier Mission (Texas); the ruins of Casa Grande (Arizona); and landscapes of Texas and Arizona. This album was probably owned by "C. W. Hornick," whose name is engraved on the album's front cover; he may also be the photographer. Item titles transcribed from written captions for each photograph.

  Photograph album of a trip on S.S. Grenada : views of Cuba, Grenada, Trinidad, Venezuela, and Mexico

  Visual Materials

  A disbound photograph album with 85 commercial and family photographs documenting travel aboard the S.S. Grenada to locations including Havana, Cuba; Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Chihuahua, Mexico; Venezuela; Grenada; and Port of Spain, Trinidad. There are several port scenes in various locations, showing ships, local vendors, and coal being loaded onto ships. Photographs taken in Havana show the harbor, including the sunken remains of the USS Maine; the cathedral; and Castillo del Morro. Photographs of Venezuela show indigenous dwellings and the Orinoco River. Photographs of Mexico show views of Mexico City including interiors of the Castillo de Chapultepec, an aqueduct in Chihuahua, and the city of Orizaba.

  Bell family photograph albums of travel in the American West

  A collection of 10 family photograph albums, 1908-1924, chiefly of trips to tourist sites and national parks in the Western United States, depicting travel by car, mountain camping, natural scenery, and hiking. Little is known about the Bell family, but most of the snapshots have captions identifying locations and dates. One album says photographs by J. O. Downing, and there is a postcard album with postcards sent from all over the country, approximately 1910s. Album contents: Vol. 1. Sierra Club trip, Glacier National Park, 1924 -- Vol. 2. My 1923 Outing: Southern Nevada - Southern Utah - Northern Arizona (with two-page narrative describing an 1,850-mile automobile trip) -- Vol. 3. Construction of Granite Reef Dam, 1908, on the Salt River, Arizona, with workers' encampment and residences.   This album contains typical commercial photographs of the towns and scenery of California, Oregon and Washington dating from the 1890s. Of note are early views of San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, San Francisco, Tacoma, and Seattle. There are also views of California missions and coastal landscapes. The Oregon photographs are of scenery only. Photographs of California include San Diego; Casa de Estudillo in Old Town San Diego; Mission San Luis Rey, San Juan Capistrano, and Santa Barbara; Santa Barbara; San Luis Obispo; Confederate general James Longstreet's Los Angeles home; the Bellevue Terrace Hotel; various Los Angeles homes; Pasadena; Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin's Santa Anita ranch; San Francisco city scenes; and wilderness en route to Oregon. Oregon photographs show images of the Columbia River; Mt. Hood; Latourell Falls; Multnomah Falls; and nature scenes. Photographs of Washington state include Tacoma; Green River; Native Americans from an unidentified tribe; Seattle; and Angeline, the daughter of Chief Seattle of the Suquamish tribe. Twenty-six of the pictures in this album were photographed by Isaiah West Taber and twenty-two were photographed by W.H.J. and Company. It may be that William H. Jeffers created those twenty-two photographs, as he was active in California during this time period. Other photographers who contributed to this album include Thomas H. Rutter, Charles B. Talbot, and Boyd & Braas (William F. Boyd and George H. Braas). The initials "E.B.R." and the year 1897 are embossed on the photo album's spine.

  A photograph album with commerical photographic prints of various locations in California including: Santa Barbara, an orange grove in Riverside, Coronado Beach, Pasadena, a petrified forests in Napa Valley, San Luis Obispo, various locations in San Francisco including the Japanese Garden, and views of Yosemite. The location names are handwritten above the images. Several hotels in the various locations are also depicted. May have been compiled by an English tourist to the area as the album has a stamp: "Brough & Son, Commercial stationers, 6 Cannon Row, Westminster".
