    A collection of 25 photographs, most likely compiled by railroad electrical engineer Samuel Horace Anderson, with an emphasis on early transportation innovations and technologies. The group includes railway-related images in Los Angeles, California, as well as a few from Seattle, Washington (items 3-7); views of various trolley cars of the Pacific Electric Railway and Los Angeles Railway; Barn No. 1 of the Los Angeles Railway with six horse-drawn tower cars lined up in front of the building (item 10); two photographs of a man in an automobile captioned "1910, Mr. Taber & demonstrating his patent wind-shield on Mr. S. Horace Anderson's 1908 Franklin" (items 14-15); views of inventor Joseph Fawke's "Aerial Swallow," an experimental, propeller-driven monorail which was built in Burbank in 1911 or 1912 (items 16-18); a 1918 commercial photograph of two men with a giant swordfish at Catalina Island (item 20); and two photographs of a Chutes amusement park water ride (also known as Washington Garden, at Washington and Grand in Los Angeles) (items 21-22). There are also some recreational group portraits as well as a studio portrait of S. Horace Anderson (Item 1), who also appears to be present in the group photograph taken in Hot Springs, Arkansas (Item 25).

    Miscellaneous California photographs

    Visual Materials

    A collection of 19 photographs by I.W. Taber showing views of California, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Monterey, Santa Barbara, Yosemite, and the San Gabriel Valley. Some of the photographs show street scenes, others are focused on hotels, mountains, missions, vineyards, orange groves, and mountains. Eighteen of the photographs are by I. W. Taber, with the remaining one image by H. E. Mathews and published by Taber (Item 10).

    The 29 card photographs, primarily cabinet and boudoir cards and cartes-de-visite, in this series are arranged in three folders in 1 box: Muzzall Family: portraits and group gatherings (Items 142-151) Portrait of Edwin Hayward; Pierce Family portrait; unidentified people and gatherings (Items 152-159) Unidentified portraits; miscellaneous Santa Barbara Photographers (Items 160-170) Among the photographs by additional photographs there is 1 post-mortem card photograph of a baby by Reed (Item 163); a view of the Mission San Luis Rey by Rea (Item 170); and various portraits by Arnold (Item 167); Edwards (Items 164-166); Elliot (Item 159); Judd (Item 168); Reed (Item 145); Stringfield (Item 169); and Westervelt (Item 158).

    The papers provide a unique perspective of 20th century California history and American business history and more specifically, a view of business practices in Los Angeles. The Business Files, the largest series of the collection has 6,436 items. This material includes invoices, receipts, bills of lading, purchase orders, bid requests, bids, statements, and other general account and job information including handwritten notes, drawings, construction plans and diagrams. The Correspondence series contains 768 items. Most of the correspondence is also business-related. The Photographs and Negatives series contains 1,110 items. The photographs (and negatives) include views of jobs (at various stages of completion), plants, machinery, as well as a few aerial views of the company's jobs. The Ephemera series contains 124 items. The series includes: business-related newsletters and bulletins, brochures and publications, newspaper clippings; tax forms, several LA Paving Company related artifacts, a copy of the 1926 Who's who in Los Angeles and a copy of Scratches: a volume of cartoons and caricatures of Los Angeles citizens, 1911 (Ernest R. Werdin is in both volumes). There is also one folder related to E. Russell Werdin's involvement in the USC Alumni Association. The 38 volumes include bid requests, daily job reports, invoices, journals, one photograph album, a plant and shop register, and stock certificates.
