Description: A collection of 49 photographs chiefly of California, especially San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and Yosemite National Park. Items 1-38 and 46 depict California locales; items 39-49 consist of miscellaneous views including two images of New England; a group portrait at Niagara Falls; and two images in Montreal, Canada. Most of the photographs are signed by photographer Alfred J. Perkins (Items 1-36); one view of Santa Cruz is signed by Reese (Item 46); the other photographers are unidentified. Photographs were removed from cards (date unknown) and mounted on 20 x 26 cm-21 x 28 cm board.

Strelitzia, Bird of Paradise, unmounted photographic postcard

Visual Materials

The collection consists of 61 gelatin silver prints made from x-ray negatives produced by Dr. Dain Loren Tasker. The collection also includes one hand-formed copper wire cursive signature label for x-rays and a hand-hammered copper and wood photograph album cover. A small number of the prints are labeled and signed by the artist. The prints depict x-ray images of a variety of flowers and plants as well as one snail. The prints range in size from 9 x 12.5 cm to 32 x 40 cm.

A suede-covered photograph album dating from approximately 1904 containing 48 mounted photographs of Santa Cruz and environs by local photographer Charles L. Aydelotte. Subjects include beachgoers at Santa Cruz beach and views of boardwalk attractions such as the first "Neptune's Casino" (built in 1904 and destroyed by fire in 1906) and the "Electric Pleasure Pier." Other subjects include the "Wave Motor," a motor-driven water tank structure that stored salt water used to wet down dirt roads; the Big Tree Grove of redwoods; a bird's-eye-view of the town; and photographs of crashing ocean waves that appear to take on the form of human faces, with titles such as "Maid of the Mist" and "The Old Man of the Sea." Most photographs have brief captions identifying the subject and location.
