Description: One scrapbook created from a completed drawing exercise book entitled American Kindergarten Book for Designing, Drawing and Painting. Volume Third- Polygons, manufactured by Miss E.M. Coe, New York, "Originator of American Kindergarten System", not before 1876. The scrapbook is 24 unnumbered pages in length; the polygon exercises have been drawn and colored in pencil and crayon. Images and poetry, cut out from magazines and newspapers, as well as several chromolithograph images, are mounted to the pages. There is ms. writing in ink and pencil throughout. "John E. Robens, from Cousin Emily" is written in ms., in ink, at the bottom of the front cover. "75 [cents cymbol]" is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover.

Little Folks' Painting and Drawing Book

One drawing/painting book, ca. 1905, entitled Little Folks' Painting and Drawing Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York. This book is 32 unnumbered pages in length and is comprised of chromolithograph and black and white lithographs in outline form for coloring. The front cover features an image of two children wrapping a gift box. "0701, McLoughlin Bros. N.Y." is printed in the lower left-hand corner beneath the image. The back cover is not illustrated, but the paper is decorated in a simple pattern. "Directions" are printed on the front pastedown, and the title page is illustrated with a black and white image of a boy painting a fence. All of the illustrations are of animals; some have been colored. A ms. inscription in ink is on the title page. "2.-" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the title page.

Drawing Book

One book of original drawings entitled Drawing Book, created by Frederick Harris of Springfield, Massachusetts. The drawing book was "Sold by M.J. Whipple & Co., Importers of Artists' Materials" in Boston, ca. 1850. The book is 10 unnumbered leaves in length, and contains 15 original pencil drawings. The front cover is an engraving; an elaborate, decorative frame surrounds the title and three vignettes. The original pencil drawings are primarily of houses and buildings; there is also an image of a modern-looking couch. None of the drawings are signed. "F.H." is written in ms., in ink, on the insides of the covers. "Frederick Harris. Springfield, Mass." is written in ms., in ink, on the front cover.

Drawing Book, For Copies

Two drawing books of original and copied drawings entitled Drawing Book, For Copies, one created by Carrie Cooley, the other by Mattie Cooley, manufactured by John Marsh, Manufacturing Stationer and Importer, Boston, ca. 1855. Each book is 12 unnumbered leaves in length and contains pencil drawings copied from other sources. Both books have illustrated front covers; a delicate and elaborate floral frame surrounds the title and a vignette of a steam engine train. The back covers are manufacturer's advertisements. The drawing book in Env. 42 is bound in green paper, and "Carrie Cooley" is written in ms., in pencil, on the front cover. The drawing book in Env. 43 is bound in beige paper, and "Mattie [?] Cooley" is written in ms., in pencil, on the front cover, as well as in ink in the upper right-hand corner. Tissue paper guard sheets are bound in between each of the leaves in both books.

Introductory Lessons in Drawing and Painting in Water-Colors

One art instruction book entitled Introductory Lessons in Drawing and Painting in Water-Colors, by Marion Kemble, published by S.W. Tilton & Company, Boston, copyright 1882. Following a preface and an introduction, the book is informally divided into 4 sections, the first of which is entitled "Perspective". The remaining sections are: "Water colors," "Directions for coloring". The book is 66 pages in length, with an additional 13 unnumbered pages of testimonials and advertisements at the end. Two pages of publisher's advertisements for "Self-Instructive Lessons in drawing and painting in water-colors" precede the title page. Each section within the book is illustrated with line drawings; the section entitled "Directions for coloring" contains 7 full-page illustrations. Of these, 6 are numbered and are accompanied by textual instruction for painting. The back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "Bulfinch's Mythology. The Age of Fable" edited by Rev. E.E. Hale. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. "H.N.[?] Gey.[?]" is written in ms. in ink, in the upper right-hand corner, "V.B. Cummings" is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of the front cover.

Abbie Gilbert, Ridgefield Kindergarten, 1905-1906

One scrapbook of original artwork created by Abbie Gilbert. Written on the front cover, in ms. is Abbie Gilbert, Ridgefield Kindergarten, 1905-1906. The scrapbook is 36 pages in length, and is covered with two pieces of heavy cardboard, and bound with yellow ribbon ties. It contains 8 examples of colored paper weaving, 8 examples of yarn sewing (pictures and designs sewn onto paper), and 13 original crayon drawings, all created by Abbie Gilbert. All of the crayon drawings are either titled or labeled, in ms., in an adult's hand. The first page contains an image of Friedrich Froebel, with a ms. label below, reading: "Friedrich Froebel. Founder of the Kindergarten." The last page contains 3 mounted Perry Pictures images. Accompanying the scrapbook is a postcard image of a kindergarten. The label on the verso reads "Bennington's experimental kindergarten, the brainchild of German educator Friedrich Froebel, uses his blocks and ideas of 'directed play' that revolutionized education. 1896."

The Teachers' Companion to the American Drawing-Slates: No. 1.--Free-Hand Drawing, Elementary and Advanced

One book entitled The Teachers' Companion to the American Drawing-Slates: No. 1.--Free-Hand Drawing, Elementary and Advanced, by Walter Smith, published by Noyes, Holmes, and Company, Boston, 1872. On the verso of the title page is printed: "Riverside, Cambridge: Electrotyped and Printed by H.O. Houghton and Company." This booklet is 52 numbered pages in length, and features white-on-black drawing card reproductions as illustrations. Following an 8-page introduction, the book is divided into two sections, Free-hand Drawing, parts 1 and 2. Both sections include use of straight and curved lines. The insides of the front and back covers, as well as the back cover, are blank. "E.A.W." (previous owner) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover. "25-" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover.
