    One painting book entitled Birds to Paint, published by the Saalfield Publishing Co., Akron, Ohio, 1910. The front cover features a parrot with a yellow head. On the back cover is a child's writing; the name "Louise" can be read. Thirty images of various birds are included, six of which have an identical color image. These color images were meant to guide the student in the use of color. The first page describes the book as: "a paint book for boys and girls which supplies sketches ready to color." Most of the images have been filled in with crayon rather than watercolor.

    One painting book entitled The Wild Animal ABC Painting Book, published by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd., 1895. The front cover shows a boy standing on a short ladder, painting the book's title on an elephant. The upper right hand corner has been cut out to conform to the elephant's forehead. The back cover had some printing, most has disappeared due to water damage, but it appears to have contained publication information. The book, printed in Bavaria, contains twenty pages of images tied to corresponding letters and text. (For example, "B is for Beaver who builds a mud home.") The majority of the images in the book are in outline form, although some are printed with a matching color image to help guide the student in the use of color. Some of the images have been painted in with watercolor.

    One painting book entitled Big Animal Paint Book, published by Charles E. Graham & Co., New York, 1916. The title page reads: Big Animal Painting and Drawing Book. This 44-page book contains both black and white and color images of wild and domestic animals. Instructions are printed opposite the title page. Some of the animals included are tigers, cows, goats, geese, squirrels, fox and lions. The pages are unnumbered and some are blank. The front cover is a color image of two yolked oxen, with the title in a banner over their heads. The back cover is blank. Some of the images have been colored in, and some of the blank pages contain original artwork. "Arnold Forster, Steep Falls, Maine" is written twice, in ms., in ink, on the first page. "6." (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the first page. The book's shape conforms to the lower portions of the animals' heads.

    One painting book entitled Objects to Paint, published by the Saalfield Publishing Co., Akron, Ohio, 1910. The cover of the book shows three identical girls, dressed in red coats with black umbrellas. On the back cover "Herbert From Aunt Hattie" is written in ms., in pencil. On the inside cover in crayon , is the name "Herbert Goody". Thirty images of various objects and scenes, such as a ball or a train of cars or national flags are included in the book. Six of the images are mirrored with an identical color image to guide the student in the use of color. The first page describes the book as "a paint book for boys and girls which supplies sketches ready to color." Most of the images have been filled in with crayon rather than watercolor.

    One painting book entitled Palette Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1892. The cover of the painting book shows a young man holding a painted image while a young girl takes his arm. The back cover depicts a watercolor set, water, brushes, paint tube, and compass. The inside front cover lists "a few practical instructions for young painters" including suggestions on what colors to include in the student's watercolor set and how to mix them. The book is designed so that the student studies a colored image and then apply color to an outline image. There are a total of 22 images: eleven in color and eleven in outline. The images depict various scenes of people, children, animals, and nursery rhyme characters with tag lines at the bottom. None of the images have been filled in. A "10.00" is penciled in on the upper-right corner of the title page.

    One boxed painting set entitled Tom Sawyer Painting Set, manufactured by Standard Solophone Manufacturing Company, N.Y., in conjunction with Paramount Pictures, copyright 1931. This set is comprised of 30 cakes of watercolor paint, two metal dishes, four small tubes of watercolor paints, 8 colored wax crayons, 8 outline images for painting, 2 color images (stills) from the movie, and a 4-page "'Tom Sawyer' Nuart Poster Color Guide." The images in this set are based on the Paramount Pictures movie Tom Sawyer starring Jackie Coogan as Tom. Four of the eight paint-by-number outline images have been completed. On the lid of the box is a scene of 'Tom' painting a portrait of 'Junior Durkin', who is seated in front of him. An artist's palette and a box of paints are behind 'Tom'. Below the image of the two boys is printed "Characters from the Paramount Photo-Play." "Copyright 1931" and "Made by Standard Solophone Mfg. Co., N.Y. Made in USA" and "Picture contents copyright 1931 by Standard Solophone Mfg. Co., Inc." are printed in the lower left and right-hand corners, respectively, of the lid. The watercolor paint inside the box has been lightly used; the crayons have not been used.
