This 24-page painting book is comprised of lithograph images for painting and tracing and chromolithograph plates as samples. "Father Tuck's Little Artists Series" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover. The front and back covers are chromolithographs; the image on the front cover is of a boy, seated on the floor, in front of a painting he has created. The image on the back cover is of a child's drum toy. "Instructions for Little Artists" are printed on the inside of the front cover, and more information about color is printed on the inside of the back cover. "12.50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of the inside of the front cover.

    Father Tuck's "Fairy Folk" Painting Book

    One painting book entitled Father Tuck's "Fairy Folk" Painting Book, Complete with Paints and Brush, published by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd., of London, ca. 1907. This book is part of Father Tuck's Patent "Paintbox" Series. The front cover shows a leprechaun, or elf, seated and painting. Above the image are the remnants of six watercolors--red, yellow, blue, pink, green and brown--on slips of paper. The front cover and the book's pages are cut away in oval shapes around the watercolors. Illustrations of other painting books in the Father Tuck's Series are shown, which lists this book as No. 2571. Nine color images from various folk tales and children's stories, including Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and Robinson Crusoe, appear within the book. Blank pages were meant to be used for copying. (The owner has used them for unrelated pencil and watercolor work.) All the illustrations are signed by Mabel Lucie Attwell. A ms. note "$8- 6448, 8 Lucie Mabel Atwell (sic) plates" appears on the front cover. The initials "V.W." appear inside along with the name "Vera W.".

    One painting book entitled Our Pets' Portraits Painting Book, published by Raphael Tuck & Sons Co., Ltd., New York, London and Paris, ca. 1910. The booklet is part of Father Tuck's Little Artists' Series. This booklet is 24 unnumbered pages in length, and is composed of color and matching outline images for coloring. The front cover is a chromolithograph of a girl painting a portrait of a cat. "Father Tuck's Little Artists Series" is printed in the lower right-hand corner of the front cover. The back cover is a chromolithograph of a boy, dressed in a sailor suit, carving a piece of wood. Printed at the bottom of the back cover are: "No. 3629" below the publisher's logo; "Designed at the Studios in England"; and "Published by Raphael Tuck & Sons, Co., Ltd., New York-London-Paris". The inside of the front cover contains "Instructions for Little Artists", which are continued on the inside back cover. Most of the images have been colored in. "12.50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.

    One drawing book entitled Little Darlings' Drawing Book, published by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd., London, ca. 1900. The chromolithograph image on the front cover shows a young girl, with a rabbit in her lap, drawing in a book; the lower-left corner bears the series title Father Tuck's Little Artists' Series. The back cover features a girl running next to a hoop. The company's trademark and "No. 3625" are in the lower left-hand corner above design and printing locations--England and Germany, respectively. The book has 16 pages of outline images, and tracing paper overlays. The images depict children at play, or are scenes from children's stories and are variously signed "MB", "EH". "M Bowley" or "Edith Taylor"; some are unsigned. Seven of the outline images have been filled in using colored pencils or crayons; others have been traced. Across the top of the front cover, the name "Miss Hazel Wheeler" has been written in pencil. Inside the front cover, also in pencil, is "Hazel Wheeler. Christmas 1904." On the back cover, in the upper right-hand corner, is a price sticker with "8--" written in ink.

    One drawing/painting book, ca. 1905, entitled Little Folks' Painting and Drawing Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York. This book is 32 unnumbered pages in length and is comprised of chromolithograph and black and white lithographs in outline form for coloring. The front cover features an image of two children wrapping a gift box. "0701, McLoughlin Bros. N.Y." is printed in the lower left-hand corner beneath the image. The back cover is not illustrated, but the paper is decorated in a simple pattern. "Directions" are printed on the front pastedown, and the title page is illustrated with a black and white image of a boy painting a fence. All of the illustrations are of animals; some have been colored. A ms. inscription in ink is on the title page. "2.-" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the title page.

    One painting book entitled Kiddie Paint Book, published by Charles E. Graham & Co., New York, ca. 1918. The image on the front cover shows a young boy in a World War I army uniform, and below the title is the series title "0901 Kute Paint Book Series." The back cover features two cats, dressed as humans, in a living room scene--the male is wearing a green coat with tails. The company's trademark and "Made in the U.S.A." are in the lower right-hand corner. The book has 9 unique images, most in outline--only three were printed in color. Most images depict anthropomorphised and comical animals. One of the images, a squirrel driving a car, has been filled in using watercolors. In the upper left-hand corner of the front inside cover, in pencil, is written "5.50".
