One penmanship book entitled Payson, Dunton & Scribner's National System of Penmanship in 12 Numbers, Revised and Improved, No. 7, by G.H. Shattuck and A.S. Manson, published by Potter, Ainsworth & Company, New York, 1875. This book is 24 numbered pages in length, and contains 24 exercises, all of a business nature. At the top of each page is the sample, and below it is space for copying. Some of the exercises include "Order", "Promissory Note", "Ledger Account" and "Bill of Exchange". A leaf-and-stick frame sourrounds the title on the front cover. The inside of the front cover includes instructions for teaching this booklet. On the inside of the back cover are "Diagrams Showing the Elements and Principles, and Their Application to Letters." The back cover features a publisher's advertisement for school and college textbooks, and an image of different kinds of Payson, Dunton and Scribner's pens ("business", "ladies'", "Commercial", etc.). Most of the exercises have been completed, in ink, by a previous owner. "Gracie Adams" is written in ms., in pencil, on the front cover. Laid into this book is a 4-page pamphlet entitled "Little Pilgrim Lesson Paper, prepared by Mrs. W.F. Crafts, April 20, 1884".

Barnes' National System of Penmanship

One penmanship book entitled Barnes' National System of Penmanship, published by A.S. Barnes & Co., New York and Chicago, 1886. This book is 24 pages in length, and contains 24 exercises. Across the top of each page are sample words and numbers for copying. The remainder of each page is eleven lined sections for student copying. For example, the items across the top of page 1 are: "X, extra, Xenia, W, waves, Warner, 1". On the front cover a decorative, leafy frame surrounds title information. An image of a bee is in the lower right-hand corner of the frame. The back cover is an advertisement for the Barnes' National Sytem of Penmanship, its penmanship charts, ink, pens and popular drawing books. The inside of the front cover features four instructional images for correct body and hand positions for writing. Below this are textual instructions for correct form and position while writing. On the inside of the back cover are numbered and labeled examples of "Barnes' National System of Penmanship." All of the lessons have been completed, in ink, by a previous owner. "Laura E. Dix" (previous owner) is written in ms., in ink at the top of the front cover.

One penmanship book entitled The Normal Review System of Writing, Tracing Course, No. 1, by D. H. Farley and W. B. Gunnison, published by Silver, Burdett & Co., Boston, New York and Chicago, 1889. This book is 24 pages in length, and contains 22 different exercises. The last page is a duplicate of the first, containing exercises 1 and 2. There are two exercises per page; the sample for copying in black print, with the exercises repeated below, in light blue ink, for tracing. Each lesson is to be traced four times. Instructions for proper positions, movements and notes to the teacher, along with several illustrations, are on the inside of the front cover. On the inside of the back cover is "The Normal System of Writing, A Key to Principles". On the back cover is an explanation of this system of writing, with brief outlines of the various courses within the system. None of the exercises have been completed.

One penmanship book entitled The Normal Review System of Writing, Regular Course, No. 4 1/2, by D. H. Farley and W. B. Gunnison, published by Silver, Burdett & Co., Boston, New York and Chicago, 1891. The book is 24 pages in length, and contains 23 exercises. At the top of each page is the lesson, which is to be copied in the space below. Approximately every fifth lesson is a review of the previous four lessons. The writing samples themselves are didactic. Some examples are: "The Executive power is vested in the President, who holds office for four years. His salary is $50,000 per annum."; "The privilege of the writ of 'Habeas Corpus' cannot be suspended unless when the public safety may require it." Instructional text and illustrations are found on the inside of the front cover: "position at the desk"; "movements"; penholding" and "suggestions to teacher." On the inside of the back cover is "The Normal Review System of Writing, A Key to Principles", with samples of letters and numbers. The back cover outlines the various courses within the Normal Review System of Writing. None of the lessons have been completed.

Harper's Writing Books: Symmetrical Penmanship with Marginal Drawing Lessons, for Schools and Families

One penmanship book entitled Harper's Writing Books: Symmetrical Penmanship with Marginal Drawing Lessons, for Schools and Families, published by Harper & Brothers, New York, 1868. The subtitle reads: School and Family Series: Writing and Drawing, In Ten Numbers, Number 5. This penmanship practice book is 24 pages in length. Across the top of each page are the letters, phrases or sentences which are to be copied in the lined spaces below. Along the outer vertical margin of each page is a shaded block of figures and drawing exercises to be copied. On the front cover, the title surrounds several images and vignettes of people writing and drawing. The centered vignette shows three students seated at a table, writing. Instructional text, including specific directions for Book 5, are printed on the inside of the front cover, and continue on to the inside of the back cover. The back cover also features instructions for using and copying the additional exercises found in the margins of the book. None of the exercises have been completed.

On The Technique of Manuscript Writing

One penmanship book entitled On The Technique of Manuscript Writing, by Marjorie Wise, published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta and San Francisco, 1924. On the first page is a series statement: "Series on CHildhood Education, edited by Patty Smith Hill." As stated in the Introduction, this book teaches "English manuscript writing." It begins with 24 pages of introductory and prefatory material, and continues with 54 pages of instructions, lessons, examples and exercises. Opposite each lesson are lined pages on which to practice the lesson. Some of the lessons included are: "Essential forms- the alphabet"; "The beginning of ink work"; "Choice and individuality"; "Spacing" and "Judging the work." None of the lessons have been filled in. Laid in at the front is a publisher's promotional flyer.
