Reward of Merit

Description
A collection of six (6) Reward of Merit cards, each with Reward of Merit printed on them, and each with a chromolithograph image. The cards range in date from 1859 to 1883. These cards were presented to students by their teachers for performance ( either academic or personal) well done. The cards vary in size, but are approximately 4 1/2 in. W x 3 in. H, except for Env. 6 which is 4 1/2 in. W x 7 in. H. A description of each follows. Env. 1 is entitled "A Token of Honor to a Diligent Scholar". A lithograph image of a group of fruit is printed on the front; this has been colored in with watercolor paints. A manufacturer and date are not printed, but it appears to be ca. 1880. "To Lottie from her teacher" is written in ms., in pencil, across the bottom, below the image. A note from DK accompanies this: "Currier or Currier and Ives? Very rare" The back of the card contains 2 ms. notes: "To Lottie from her teacher, Emma" and "15-" (price), both written in pencil. Env. 2 "Reward of Merit " is printed across the top of the card, and "Presented to" , "By" and "Teacher" are printed as well, all in gold. A chromolithograph image of three rabbits is centered on the card. The recipient, "Hattie Heald", is written in ms., as is "Minnie A. Mundall," the teacher. Neither a date nor printer is listed on the card; it appears to be ca. 1890. Env. 3 "Reward of Merit", "Presented to", "By" and "Teacher" are printed in gold on the right-hand side of the card; a chromolithograph image of two children at play is on the left-hand side. "Hattie L. Heald" (the recipient) is written in ms., as is presenter is "Martha A. Sampsen," the teacher. Neither a date nor printer is listed on the card; it appears to be ca. 1890. Env. 4 is a small merit card which reads "Bank of Industry Will Pay Ten Honors to" (printed) "Marilin Wilcox" (in ms.). The teacher's name, below the recipient's name, is too faint to read. The text in the upper right-hand corner reads: "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1859 to A.C. Beaman in the Clerk's Office in the District Court of the Southern District of New York. Eng'd by W.I. Hamnby." The card is engraved, with two images of cherubs on the left and right-hand sides. It has been hand colored with watercolor. Env. 5 reads "Reward of Merit presented to" (printed) "Louise S. Bryant" by "S. B. Ring", Teacher." The text and decorative border are printed in gold. This card is vertically oriented; a chromolithograph scene is mounted to the upper portion of the card, above the text and ms. writing. Neither a printer's name nor a date are present; the card appears to have been printed ca. 1890. Env. 6 is the largest of the merit cards; this one is also vertically oriented. "Reward of Merit. Presented to" (printed) "Carrie Martin" (ms.) "By" (printed) "Nellie Earright" (ms.) "Teacher." The printing is in the lower right-hand quadrant of the card; the majority of the card is a chromolithograph image of a bird perched on a blooming cherry tree branch, against a blue background. "Copyright 1883 by S. Gibson" and "Gibson & Co., Cin., O." are printed along the bottom edge of the card. The upper right-hand section of the card is cut in the shape of an artist's palette, with a thumb hole. Written on the verso of the card, in ms., is "Reading- 98. Writing- 95. Spelling- 85. Arithmetic- 98."

    Two certificates of honour awarded for a drawing examination, issued by The Royal Drawing Society. Both cards were awarded to Irene Charlotte Chapman. Both cards are illustrated, and contain printed and ms. text. The award in Env. 7 reads: "This is to certify that Irene Charlotte Chapman (aged 9) a pupil at St. Joseph's School, Slough, obtained a Pass in Division Prepatory at the Drawing Examination held June 1914.", Signed by H.G. Montgomery, Chairman of Council, and T.R. Ablett, Art Director. The illustrated portion of the card is signed by E.W. Little. The award in Env. 8 reads: "This is to certify that Irene Charlotte Chapman (aged 13) a pupil at St. Joseph's S. Slough obtained Honours in Division Three at the Drawing Examination held June 1919." Signed by H.G. Montgomery, Chairman of Council, and T.R. Ablett, Art Director. The illustrated portion of this certificate is signed by Helen S. Kuck II.     A collection of eleven (11) envelopes of materials relating to or about puppetry and marionettes, ranging in date from 1928 to 1940, all collected or authored by Mabel Spofford. There are approximately 60 pieces within this box . Env. 1 contains 2 newspaper clippings about a marionette performance, circa 1930. Env. 2 contains 4 flyers from the New England Puppetry Institute, dated 1938. Env. 3 contains 2 flyers about marionettes and puppetry. Env. 4 contains 2 informational flyers regarding performances by the Fuller Studios (North Quincy, Massachusetts) and The Forrest Marionettes (Fitchburg, Massachusetts), circa 1940. Env. 5 contains 5 flyers, notices and newsletters from the Kingsland Marionettes of New York; some of the flyers are notices of their summer workshops in Brandon, Vermont. These items range in date from 1937 to 1940. Env. 6 contains 2 leaves (an article) removed from a 1937 issue of Look magazine about marionettes. Env. 7 contains 3 pieces. The first is an article from a magazine entitled "Marionettes in the Home" by Howard L. White. The second is 2 typescript pages of notes; the third is a color image, removed from a magazine, of 5 male faces. Env. 8 contains 6 pieces, which include typescript pages about stage plays and lighting of stage plays, a marionette performance invitation, a publisher's advertisement, and a program for the Twelfth Annual Conference of Supervisors and Teachers of Art at the Massachusetts School of Art, February 1935. Env. 9 contains 4 typescript pages and 1 envelope from the New England Puppetry Institute, sponsored by the Curry School of Expression. Env. 10 contains approximately 30 pieces of manuscript notes and newspaper clippings and printed items, including drawings and plans of puppets, all relating to various puppetry shows and performances. Env. 11 contains a 1933 exhibition catalog entitled Exhibition of Puppets and Marionettes with a note on Puppetry in America, by Paul McPharlin, held in Chicago from July-September 1933. It is 24 pages in length, and is illustrated. "Katharine Daniels, 1933" is written in ms., in ink, on the front cover. Title supplied by cataloger.

    A set of five (5) miscellaneous pieces of original artwork (probably) by Mabel Spofford, ca. 1947. Env. 1 is a pencil-on-tracing paper illustration of a view of the globe, with American Red Cross flags protruding from various countries. Below the image is the phrase "Your Red Cross It's For You Are You For It?" Measures 4 x 6 inches. Env. 2 is a pen and ink drawing of a barefoot hiker with his dog, and 3 angels above. The image is signed and dated "M.S. 2.5.47". Measures 7 1/4 in. W x 10 1/2 in. H. Env. 3 is a crayon and watercolor image of a wrapped bouquet of pink and yellow flowers. Measures 9 in. W x 12 in. H. Env. 4 is an unfinished sketch, in crayon and watercolor (perhaps watercolor crayons) of a flower. Measures 9 in. W x 12 in. H. Env. 5 is a crayon design. Measures 9 in. W x 12 in. H.

The first 6 drawings (Env. 45-50) are charcoal drawings of geometric solids; the next 3 (Env. 51-53) are also charcoal drawings, the first two are of a statue face, the third of a bowl; the next 2 (Env. 55-56) are colored chalk drawings, and the last envelope (Env. 57) is a two-sided leaf of ms. notes, in pencil.     Four newspaper clippings of quotations from George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The first clipping (Env. 09) includes a reproduction of a photograph, aerial view, of the Lincoln and Washington Monuments, with quotations from George Washington and Abraham Lincoln printed below the image. The next two clippings (Env. 10 and Env. 11) were cut from the February 12, [date cut off] issue of the Washington Post. They are reproductions of poems about Abraham Lincoln; the first is titled "Poems for your scrapbook. Lincoln. By George Henry Boker." from 'In Praise of Lincoln', published by J.B. Lippincott Co."; the other is titled : "Lincoln (On visiting the Memorial at Washington) by Henry Gillen." The fourth clipping is a 9-line quotation from Abraham Lincoln's speech at Gettysburg." The source of this clipping is unidentified.
