The frame is constructed of four separate pieces that are joined together by black string; the corners have been carved to allow the string to be secure. A wooden back with a pivoted brace holds the slate in place. Accompanying the slate are 6 leaves of double-sided woodcut images for use with the slate.     Visual Materials

    One glass drawing slate contained within a wooden easel, ca. 1900. Above the slate (also in the easel) is a built-in abacus with blue and black beads. The slate accounts for the lower two-thirds of the front, and the abacus the upper third. Between the slate and the abacus are 6 round wells, perhaps to hold paints. Along the sides of the slate are long, thin, vertical wells for paintbrushes. The easel is painted black and does not bear a manufacturer's name nor a date. The three legs of the easel are hinged at the top of the wooden frame. Accompanying this are 2 sheets of paper, one of which contains outline images for copying. Title supplied by cataloger.

    One glass drawing slate, ca. 1895. The slate is contained within a wooden frame; two rows of metal wells (presumably for watercolor paint) are mounted into the top and bottom sides of the frame; each row contains 6 small, rectangular wells. Along the left side of the slate is a metal piece which contains two holes, perhaps for holding paints. The slate bears neither a date nor a manufacturer's name. Accompanying the slate are 5 sheets of chromolithograph and outline images for copying onto the slate. The slate has the letters "A" and "B" written in ms., in pencil, on it.
