The slate accounts for the lower two-thirds of the front, and the abacus the upper third. Between the slate and the abacus are 6 round wells, perhaps to hold paints. Along the sides of the slate are long, thin, vertical wells for paintbrushes. The easel is painted black and does not bear a manufacturer's name nor a date.
