One penmanship book entitled Welby's Book of Alphabets, for Ornamental Penmen, Professional Letterers, and Students, with Practical Directions for Lettering, Illuminating, etc., by Edward Welby, published by Hall & Whiting, Boston, Massachusetts, 1880. The book begins with 10 unnumbered pages of introductory and instructional text which contain information about what kinds of materials to use and how to use them. The remainder of the book consists of 24 unnumbered pages of sample alphabets- one per page- in a variety of plain and decorative fonts. Space is provided below each letter for copying. The sample fonts are identified as: Roman, Italic, Roman, Italic, Egyptian, Engrossing, Engrossing, Old English, Old English, German Text, German Text, Old English Ornamented, German Text Ornamented, Italic Ornamented, Roman Ornamented, Roman Ornamented, Ornamental, Gothic Initials, Church Text, French, Celtic. The last unidentified alphabet is a wonderfully whimsical array of human figures, some with objects, formed to create letters. This book has not been written in. "Price, 75 cents" is printed on the front cover, below the title.

One instructional book, copyright 1947, entitled Finger-Painting and How I Do It, by Ruth Faison Shaw, 47 pp., published by Art for All, Inc., New York. The book includes a short history on Shaw's finger-painting methods, basic techniques, and several black and white illustrations of Ms. Shaw and her work. Illustrated instructions and directions are given for creating images of landscapes, animals, floral pictures, and designs. On the inside of the back cover is a listing of "Art Books for All", which provides titles of books for a variety of subjects.

Lessons in Lettering: A Series of Practice Books With Text, Examples and Exercises, Book 2 Inclined Single Stroke

One penmanship book entitled Lessons in Lettering: A Series of Practice Books With Text, Examples and Exercises, Book 2 Inclined Single Stroke, by Thomas E. French and William D. Turnbull, published by McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc., New York and London, 1924. This book is 40 pages in length, and is comprised of 20 lessons on numbered sheets. At the head of the first page is the overall lesson for the book: "Inclined Single Stroke Commercial Gothic". Each sheet, or lesson, includes instructional text on the left-hand side of each page opening, and the actual lesson and copying space on the right-hand side. The title on the front cover is within a single-rule frame. The top inside front cover reads: "Second edition, fifth impression". Below that is a listing of materials required for the use of this book, and below that is a brief advertisement for "Lessons in Lettering for Students and Draftsmen: a series of practice books with text examples and exercises." On the inside of the back cover are four variations of a single alphabet and number "face" that are part of Sheet 20. On the back cover is a brief advertisement for several drawing and lettering books. Several publisher's advertisements for drawing books and vocational books are laid in to this lettering book. None of the exercises have been completed.

The ABC of Lettering for Public Schools

One envelope of instruction sheets on lettering. The majority of the 19 sheets appear to be components of The ABC of Lettering for Public Schools by Schuyler Bull, of Rochester, New York. This set is composed primarily of lettering sheets (of alphabets, numbers, and phrases) and some printed instruction text written and copyrighted by Schuyler Bull. Additional sheets are included also, but these appear to have come from other sources. Accompanying these sheets is an envelope addressed to Miss Mabel Spofford.

Service Center Booklet 2" is printed at the bottom of the front cover. This book is 112 pages in length, contains black and white illustrations, and bibliographical references. "Copyright 1943 by Progressive Education Association" and "Printed in the United States of America by Reliable Press, Inc., New York, N.Y." are printed on the verso of the half-title. The book is divided into 13 primary topics: "Materials and Design; Art and Aviation Education; Map Making; Pictorial Charts; Informative Exhibits; Puppetry; Posters, Handbills, and Booklets; Dyeing, Painting, and Printing with Natural Materials; Weaving and Rug Making; Pottery and Modeling; Carving Wood, Plaster and Stone; Using Light and Materials for Photograms; Exploring Plastics." Laid in is an instructional sheet published by Educational Materials, Inc. for hand loom weaving. "Mabel Spofford, 1944, $1.25" is written in ms. on the front cover.

Vere Foster's Complete Course of Drawing: Landscape

One drawing book entitled Vere Foster's Complete Course of Drawing, published by Blackie & Son, Limited, London, Glasgow and Dublin; and F.W. Devoe & Co., New York, ca. 1868. New Edition, 72 pages (only pages 6-8 are numbered) part VI (of XVI). This drawing book provides visual and textual instruction for landscape drawing. The first 8 pages, presumably written by Wimperis and Needham, contain instructional text. The black and white lithographs are signed primarily by J. Needham and F. (Frederick) Jones. The illustrated front cover is printed in blue ink; the back cover is a manufacturers' advertisement for "Vere Foster's Drawing Copy-Books". At the top of the back cover is the statement: "Vere Foster's Drawing Copy-Books have been adopted by the Department of Science and Art, South Kensignton, London; and both Writing and Drawing Copy-Books have been adopted by the Commissioners of National Education in Ireland, by the London and other principal School Boards, and by the Department of Public Instruction of the City of New York." The illustrations within this drawing book include both outline and complete views of English and Welsh landscapes, homes, bridges, and other natural views.
