    Notebook contains newspaper clippings regarding Lincoln's speeches about his views on slavery and racial equality with added notes by Lincoln. Also present is an autograph draft or copy letter signed from Lincoln, Springfield, Illinois, to James N. Brown, 1858 October 18. Clippings date from 1854 to approximately 1864; Lincoln's notes are in ink and date from 1858. The notebook appears to have been created by Lincoln in 1858 for the use of James N. Brown; later notes are in pencil and are attributed to Brown. Clippings are glued to pages, most are folded. (52 pages with content)

    George Cochrane Hazelton scrapbook

    The scrapbook contains items collected by George C. Hazelton throughout his visit to California in 1879. Included in the scrapbook are: calling cards, labels from wine and champagne bottles, trade cards, menus from dinners, tickets, letters giving him privileges at various clubs, and invitations to events such as the reception for Ulysses S. Grant in San Francisco after his world tour, and a dinner reception for the journalist John Russell Young.

    Items related to Abraham Lincoln

    This series was taken by Johnston to illustrate Ida Tarbell's book, The Life of Abraham Lincoln [1903]. The images include a portrait of Abraham Lincoln and Tad (Meserve 39), Lincoln's chair and his Bible, documents and products with Lincoln labels. Most of the items were probably in the War Department collections.

    Mary Todd Lincoln letters to James Smith

    These six letters were written by Mary Todd Lincoln to Reverend James Smith from 1866 to 1870. Several of the letters were written while the Lincolns were in Europe. In these letters, Mary Todd Lincoln talks about her husband Abraham Lincoln and his library, her travels abroad, her son Robert, William Herndon and his remembrances of her husband, and Congress voting on her pension of $3,000 a year.
