The Jonathan D. Bulkley collection of illustrated billheads and letterheads contains about 36,000 billheads, letterheads, flyers, and other ephemera relating to commerce and industry in the United States from 1758 to 1952, with the bulk of the items dating from 1840 to 1910. While most of the items document products or services manufactured by American companies, countries such as Cuba, France, Great Britain, Germany, and Mexico are represented as well. Imagery and text on the materials pertain to the history of production, finance, consumerism, and advertising. Many of the items include graphic logos, decorative images of views of storefronts and factories, and detailed representations of the various products manufactured for sale. Typography on the materials also include visual motifs of varying text styles and printing techniques. The collection contains items that are both engraved, as well as lithographed. The Adventures of Ceresota

One painting book entitled The Adventures of Ceresota, published by Northwestern Consolidated Milling Co., Minneapolis, Minnesota, producers of Ceresota Flour, copyright 1912. The front cover shows Ceresota contemplating his image on a sack of flour; the subtitle, A Painting Book in Story Form, appears below the image. The back cover features the company's trademark in the upper left, an image of Ceresota cutting bread in the center, and "Serial No. 143" in the lower-right corner. The inside front cover contains copyright information, the inside back cover has "[g]eneral instructions for young artists" for using "Japanese Water Colors." There are 24 images in the book, 12 in color and 12 in outline. Each outlined image was to be filled in by using the complementary color image at its side and by following the instructions preceding each group of images. Each outline image could be cut out of the book as instructed on the "cut here" line printed on the page near the gutter. None of the images have been in removed from this particular copy. The book also explains why the flour is called Ceresota, and how Ceresota's image came to be on sacks of flour. The numeral "7--" has been penciled onto the upper-right corner of the first page.

The material is chiefly related to the economic and social history of late 19th century Virginia City, Nevada; some materials show economic connections between Virginia City and San Francisco as well as inter-state relations between Nevada and California. The collection is 90% legal documents. These documents are related to specific court cases (most filed with the First Judicial District State of Nevada). They are grouped case by case and contained in Boxes 1-11. Other types of legal documents, including deeds, indentures, and agreements, are housed in Box 12. Finally, miscellaneous legal documents share Box 13 with non-legal documents, a letter, and ephemera. The items in each series are in chronological order. Although the Consolidated Virginia Mining Company and California Mining Company are prominent in the collection, the collection includes documents related to more than 50 other mining companies (too numerous to list here). The documents comes from a variety of different law suits including: mining companies suing one another over the uses of resources such as water, building material, railroads, roads and tunnels; and employees suing their employers for wages or injury compensation.

This collection contains correspondence, business papers, 16 ledger books, maps and reports of the Consolidated Virginia Mining Company of Virginia City, Nevada, dating from 1876-1955. The 112 rolled maps in collection, dating from 1876 to 1947 document the early period, the general mining district, and other mines and mining claims on the Comstock Lode such as the Ophir mines and the Mexican Gold and Silver Mining Company. One map is signed by Charles Frederick Hoffmann. The collection includes an account book and many letters of Zeb Kendall, president of the firm.
