Description: The first few miles of the S. J. & E. were easy to construct, but as the Sierra foothills were reached, heavy cutting and filling became necessary. This crew stopped long enough to have their picture taken at "the front," somewhere near Dry Creek, early in 1912.

By this time, the railroad had been built far into the rugged fastness of the High Sierra, and was nearing the future site of the town of Cascada (Big Creek).
