Description
Microfilm of a typescript version of Joseph Grafton Hovey's autobiography, adapted from his journals by his grandson M.R. Hovey in 1953. The volume opens with a note on "The Hovey Book" and a page tracing Joseph Hovey's descent from Daniel Hovey, the "First American Progenitor of the Hovey Descendants." The autobiography begins with as account of Hovey's childhood in Massachusetts, including the death of his father, his move to Boston, and his interest in religious revivals. It then describes his move to Illinois and conversion to the Mormon Church, includes Hovey's critical reaction to John C. Bennett, and describes the days leading up to and following the death of Joseph Smith at Carthage. Hovey then gives an account of Sidney Rigdon's departure from the Church, of Hovey's own ownership of shares in the Seventies Hall, and of his departure from Nauvoo in 1846. He then writes of traveling to Winter Quarters with Joseph Young and of his experiences there from 1846-1848, including the death of his wife from illness in 1847. The first part of the account ends with a description of his overland journey to Utah and his colonization of Iron County through about 1854. The rest of the volume consists of portions of Hovey's writings from about 1855-1856, which cover his life in Palmyra, Utah, and his mission to Provo. This portion of the volume is annotated by M.R. Hovey. The volume concludes with a portion of Hovey's wife Lusannah Hovey's record of the family's move to Cache Valley in 1860 and of Joseph Hovey's death in 1868. Also included is some Hovey family genealogy.

    Microfilm of a diary and account book of Joseph Warrington McAllister, kept at Glendale and Salt Lake City from 1882-1885. The volume opens with co-op accounts for individuals and institutions, including the Glendale Trustees and Night School, in Glendale from 1882-1883. It also includes miscellaneous accounts kept from 1884-1885.The second half of the volume consists of McAllister's 1882-1884 diary, which commences with his move from Kanab to Glendale to teach school. McAllister writes of his life in Glendale, his attendance of meetings at Orderville, his move to Salt Lake City in 1883, and working in the Salt Lake Temple through 1884. Portions of the diary appear to be in pencil and may be partially illegible.

    Microfilm of the autobiography of Joseph Smith Black, along with biographies of his parents, a continued biography of Joseph Black by his son Peter Thompson Black, and assorted letters and notes. The volume opens with a genealogy of the Black family; a biographical sketch of Joseph Black's father William Black (1784-1873), who served in the 72nd Regiment of the British Army, joined the Mormon Church in Ireland in 1839, immigrated to the United States in 1842, and helped colonize southern Utah; and a biography of Joseph's mother Jane Johnston Black (b.1801). Joseph Black's autobiography recounts his childhood in Ireland and England, his travels to the United States and later Utah, his baptism into the Mormon Church, his colonizing and homesteading efforts in southern Utah, his mission to Arizona and Mexico in 1886, a detailed account of his mission to Missouri in 1888, and a chronicle of his time spent in the Utah Penitentiary, along with the results of a phrenology exam he was given before his release. Black's account ends in about 1889, and his son Peter Thomas Black extended it in 1947, writing of Black's work in building water reservoirs in Nevada (1893), his contract to deliver lime rock to Leamington, Utah (1895), and his work clearing farm land (1906). Following the autobiography is a typescript entitled "Visit to Millard County Recalls Fate of Capt. Gunnison and Party," which recounts Black's 1888 expedition to locate the site of the Gunnison Massacre, as well as later efforts by the Andrew Jensen party in about 1922; copies of letters from Black's children and friends; letters sent to Black by fellow prisoners while he was at the Utah Penitentiary, as well as copies of some letters sent by Black; and a newspaper obituary for Black (1910).

    Microfilm of the diaries of Joseph H. Richards, covering the years 1876, 1881, 1886, and 1892-1893. All of the Utah and Arizona diaries consist of brief entries recalling Richards's daily life. The 1876 volume records his life in Utah and his call to colonize Arizona; the 1881 volume records his life in the St. Joseph United Order; the 1886 diary recalls his travels from Arizona to Utah and California; and the 1892-1893 diary recounts in more detail his mission to England and Scotland, and also includes a brief autobiography.

    Microfilm of the autobiography of Samuel Miles, kept in about 1881. It includes a brief family history and descriptions of Miles' childhood and his family's move to Freedom, New York, where they were neighbors to Miles' uncle (by marriage) Warren A. Cowdery; Mormon missionaries in the area; the family's move to Missouri, where Miles worked on his father's farm; persecutions of Mormons in Missouri; a history of the Mormon expulsion to Illinois; various accounts of Joseph Smith; the family's 1845 move to Nauvoo and Miles' work as a teacher; a detailed account of Miles' time with the Mormon Battalion, first under Captain Allen (who died at Fort Leavenworth) and then Lieutenant Smith (who was unpopular compared to Jefferson Hunt), and their overland travels to San Diego and Sutter's Fort; Miles' move to Utah; a trip to California he took in 1858; the formation of the United Order at Enoch in 1874; and various notes on Miles' teaching and farming activities. The autobiography covers the years through 1881.
