Description: Medieval didactic poem in hexameter verse, claiming to be the creation of the medical school at Salerno, Italy, and promoting a healthy life through a regimen of adequate sleep, a moderate diet, and a peaceful mind. The Regimen also includes information on wine, vegetables, herbs, and meats, their therapeutic uses, which to eat, and which to avoid. The Regimen sanitatis Salernitatum and accompanying commentary are often wrongly ascribed to Arnoldus de Villa Nova. Corrected imprint from BM 15th cent. which states that this is a Venetian reprint of the 1491 Strassburg edition (Goff R-73), with expanded title. Chancery quarto, with paper measuring 20.4 x 15 cm. Text in one column. Signatures: a-h⁸. Binding: sheepskin; rebacked.

A collection of medical works which includes Mayno, de' Mayneri's Regimen santiatis, Arnaldus de Villanova's Tractatus de fleubothomia, Hippocrates' Astronomia de infirmitatibus [actually Imbrasius, of Ephesus' Prognostica de decubitu], Johannes de Zantvliete's De dietis, Nicolaus Salternitanus' Quid pro quo, Averroës' De venenis and De tyriaca, Hippocrates' Secreta, Arnaldus de Villanova's De vinis, and Roger Bacon's Epistola de accidentibus senectutis et senii. Appears to be a collection of sample typography, reproducing excerpts from various continental legal tracts, mainly in Italian, but also in Spanish and Latin. The majority of the excerpts are taken from a 1555 commentary by Spanish jurist Antonio Gómez, his Ad leges Tauri commentarium absolutissimum. It also contains sections from the Statuto de Veneto and Venetian documents which contain dates through 1709.

Manuscripts

The text is divided into three parts: Part I (pages 1-36) has five chapters on the methods of diagnosis and treatment; Part II (pages 37-158), titled "Fabrica receptorum", explains how to make specific medicines; and Part III (pages 159-1490), titled "Selectus materiae medicae experimentalis" includes an extensive collection of recipes and decriptions of ailments organized alphabetically. Text includes a foreward in which Steigendesch gives a summary of the history of medicine and the relationship his family had with medicine. On pages 1491-1557 is included a list of all the medications described in this treatise, mostly drawn from the Pharmacopoea Wirtenbergica and dated 1785 in a chronogram. Also includes a [36] page index at end.

Subject matter in the collection includes: politics and government in Washington, D.C., and Louisiana; society and customs in Washington, D.C., and New Orleans; Blair House (Washington, D.C.); land titles in Indiana Territory, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Missouri; the Ocean Canal and Transportation Company, which ran from Louisiana to St. Louis; the history of Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, from the time of purchase by John Croghan in 1839 until 1932, when it became a national park (at which time Violet Blair Janin was the primary owner); and mining in Australia. Persons represented in the collection include: James Lawrence Blair, Mary Jesup Blair, Violet Blair Janin, John Croghan, William Croghan, Albert Covington Janin, Louis Janin, Julia Clark Jesup, Thomas Sidney Jesup, George M. Wheeler, and Lucy James Blair Wheeler. Organizations represented in the collection (with which Violet Blair Janin was affiliated) include: Daughters of the American Revolution, National Association Opposed to Woman's Suffrage, National Cathedral Association, National Society of Children of the American Revolution, and the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.
