Description

A collection of meditations, sermons and prayers arranged according to the liturgical year, with many excerpts from such authors as Bonaventure, Bernard, Augustine, Anselm and Gregory. The text includes numerous added/inserted shorter texts; it is misbound and many leaves are missing. ff. 177v (rubric only), 182-217v, 164-172v. [Gerard Zerbolt van Zutphen] Van geestelijke opclimmingen. Dutch. This is the Dutch translation of De spiritualibus ascensionibus. ff. 218-231. [Pseudo Bernard] Prekel der mynnen. Dutch. This is the Dutch translation of Stimulus amoris; for the Latin text, see PL 184:953-966. Back flyleaf. [Breviary?] Latin. Provenance
Written in the northeastern Netherlands, to judge from the Ripuarian linguistic elements in the text. Colophon on f. 177v gives completion date of that text on All Souls Day, 1439; other texts were written at approximately the same time. Ex libris notes, s. XV, on f. 234v, "dijt boeck hort tw inden mergaerd ende voert gemeijn susteren" and, in the same hand, "Mechtel pijls" (crossed out and rewritten); s. XVIII, "L. Lambertus Sillekens"; f. 234, s. XIX, "Gerardus Simons [?] hoort dit boek toe. Die het vint geeft het weederom ende sie't niet en Doet hie zal __?___ Bidden Nun 1831." Belonged to Henry William Poor (1844-1915), with his red morocco ex libris on f. i; his sale, Anderson, New York, 12 January 1909, pt. III, n. 766. Apparently acquired by Henry E. Huntington at that time.
