Survey across the Isthmus of Cape Cod State of Massachusetts and Town of Sandwich of a proposed canal between Buzzards and Barnstable Bays

Description: No old shelf mark. The canal was not constructed at the time, and was proposed again by the Massachusetts Legislature in 1860 ("Report of the Joint Special Committee on the subject of a ship canal connecting Buzzard's Bay and Barnstable Bay." Available from Google Books, http://books.google.com/books?id=0aYrAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA6&dq=barnstable+bay&hl=en&ei=ZPAgTOn7OoK7nAe5ud1_&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCkQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false accessed June 22, 2010). The canal was finally constructed in the 20th century, with construction completed in 1914. Barnstable Bay appeared on 18th, 19th, and early 20th century maps of Cape Cod and Massachusetts: it appears to have referred to the southern third of Cape Cod Bay, the area it covered receding over time until it was covered only the water immediately north of Barnstable. The mystery of distilling brieflye unfolded: [instructions for fermenting and distilling liquors, wines, and "some choice waters"]

Manuscripts

The manuscript defines and explains the process of fermentation, with instructions for the fermentation and distillation of wines and liquors and recipes for making brandy, cinnamon water, and "a good water for expelling wind." The author and nationality of this brief account of distilling and fermenting is unknown; according to the dealer from whom it was purchased, the mansucript was found in the attic of an estate on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Manuscripts

Manuscript map depicting the Gaspé Bay and Cape, with ship soundings given for approach into the harbor and two drawings of landfall on either side. Executed approximately 1757, it appears to have been drawn up by the British forces while Gaspé was in French possession during the French and Indian War. The map has been attributed to Charles Rohr, an engineer with the British Forces.

Kashnor notes, "No other copy is recorded. This was evidently transmitted by the people of New Hampshire in support of their claims before the King in Council. The map is really associated with the history of the State of Vermont, for when the King established the boundary between Massachusetts and New Hampshire in 1740, the new commission of Governor Benning Wentworth extended his jurisdiction westward until it met the boundaries of other provinces, and in this way he extended his boundary westward to Lake Champlain. In 1749 the Governor made the grant of the town of Bennington, and in a few years grants of other townships, which became known as the New Hampshire Grants. In 1763 the Rev. Samuel Peters assembled with some of the settlers on Mt. Pisgah, broke a bottle of spirits with them, and christened the country Verd Mont. In the same year, Governor Colden, of New York, claimed the land held under Wentworth's grants, and issued counter-grants of the same land. He was ordered by the King to stop this, but it was the people who held the grants from Wentworth, who made the New York agents seek a more peaceful locality. The history of the case is well written by Ethan Allen. Whether this map was transmitted in 1740 or 1763, when the troubles started, is uncertain, but it is most probable that it was sent over in the latter year, for the map formerly belonged to General Amherst."
