Kashnor notes, "Shows all the American Continent, with the North-West Coast reaching above California, which is represented as an island." On North America, "This Continent with the adjoining Islands is generally supposed to have been Anciently unknown thought there are not wanting some, who will have even the Continent its self to be no other than the Insula Atlantis of the Ancients." Kashnor dates as 1698, Shirley dates 1700-01. This is the first world map in Wells' atlas, see also 093:047M for another copy. 093:198M is the second similar map from the same atlas, per Shirley. Kashnor notes, "Shows the North-West coast as far as the supposed Strait of Anian, and locates New Albion and the Port Sir Francis Drake. The Longue River of La Hontan appears to follow the course of the Upper Missouri." Moll carefully points out mistakes made by Sanson by showing phantom coastlines and skewers Dutch mapmakers for copying maps without attribution. See 093:185 for earlier dated copy of this map. This map is a later version of the Sayer & Bennett map of 1777, see 093:199M, also 093:218M for 1786 version, 105:269 for a duplicate. Insert map of Baffin's and Hudson's Bays. This map now shows Vancouver Island and corrects the River of the West, adding more exact information about the Pacific Northwest. The provisions of the 1763 Versailles treaty are removed, and instead the "Preliminaries of Peace signed at Versailles Jan 20,1783" are noted. Maine's border revised. See also 150262 (MBS 105:050).
