The books cover a wide range of topics from trees, rocks, landscapes, flowers, plants, animals, insects, human figures and architectural designs. The preparation and application of colors on paper are also discussed. The mustard seed manual was highly influencial amongst artists and historians and became widely available throughout East Asia as evidenced by its prolific edition history through the 18th to 20th centuries. It is also an example of early Chinese multi-color woodblock printing.

Chinese medical ephemera

This collection contains five woodblock printed documents about traditional Chinese medicine. There are two raffle tickets issued by the Tongren Jishantang charity clinic. The three other documents, issued by Jingxiutang are a prescription and advertisements for a cure-all remedy. These documents were likely circulated within the Chinese American community in the United States.
