Manuscripts
A collection of manuscripts and letters related to Helen Hunt Jackson. The autograph manuscripts include 21 poems and three prose works entitled: "Bits of Travel at Home," "One Woman and Sunshine," a draft of an article on Jeanne C. Smith Carr and the founding of Carmelita, her home in Pasadena, California, and "The Story of Clotilde Danarosch." The largest part of the correspondence is made up of Helen Hunt Jackson's letters to William Hayes Ward, the editor of the New York Independent. Also included are seventeen letters to Ray Palmer and his wife Ann Maria Waud Palmer; thirteen letters to Mary Elizabeth Fowler, the first government schoolteacher at Soboba in the San Jacinto Valley; four letters to Henry Chandler Bowen, the editor and proprietor of the Independent; four letters to Mrs. D. J. Whipple who ran a boarding house in San Diego and later Los Angeles; two letters to Richard Egan, a Los Angeles County supervisor; and two letters by William Sharpless Jackson and Charles C. Painter.

The collection consists of 6202 black-and-white and color photographs, pen and ink drawings, and postcards, 1412 black-and-white and color negatives, 2606 black-and-white and color slides, and ephemeral materials, 1898-1982 (bulk 1920s-1930s) collected by the Automobile Club of Southern California. They form a general photographic reference collection as well as a broad visual survey of topics of interest to California motorists. Included are images of sites in North and Central America (with an emphasis on California), Europe, the Pacific Islands, and portraits, as well as images related to other subjects of interest to the Club's membership. Many of the images were published as illustrations for articles in the Club's first member magazine, Touring Topics. A large portion of the photographs were taken by authors of articles that appeared in Touring Topics; others were commissioned by the Club; and others appear to have been sent to the Club. Photographers (and authors) include, but are not limited to, Ansel Adams, Fred Archer, Viroque Baker, George Hugh Banning, Adelbert Bartlett, Virginia S. Bartlett, Andrew R. Boone, Julius Cindrich, Norman Clyde, Will Connell, Loyd Cooper, Imogen Cunningham, Asahel Curtis, Edward Sheriff Curtis, Fred Dapprich, E.H. Davis, E.E. East, John Anson Ford, Frasher, Ewing Galloway, Forman G. Hanna, Phil Townsend Hanna, Hoag and Ford, John Edwin Hoag, Bert W. Huntoon, Philip Johnston, Dr. Frederick Monsen, Dave Packwood, C.C. This disbound album contains 123 photographs taken by photographer A. Frank Randall between 1883 and 1888. The images include studio and field photographs of Apache Indians taken during the United States military campaign to capture Apache renegades during the Apache Wars. The majority of Randall's photographs are portraits of men, women, and children from various Apache tribes in Arizona and New Mexico. Among these photographs are images of a fox tamer; a fiddler; a flutist; a well-dressed, possibly high ranking Apache man; medicine men; young girls; mothers and their infant children; and Apache chiefs. Portraits of United States Army officers and scouts include Nelson A. Miles, Leonard Wood, Wilber E. Wilder, Roger Ames, Henry W. Lawton, William A. Thompson, Amos S. Kimball, John A. Dapray, Thomas J. Clay, Frank P. Bennett, Buffalo Jack, an Arizona female scout, and Apache scouts. Randall also included photographs of Rancho Camulos, many of which show people dramatizing scenes from Helen Hunt Jackson's novel "Ramona." Antonio Franco Coronel appears in some scenes. Other images include views of Missions Santa Barbara and San Juan Capistrano, what may be Vasquez Creek and Tujunga Canyon near Los Angeles, and views of Guaymas, Mexico.
