Information in file from an unknown source says in the photograph he is wearing the uniform of 2nd lieutenant of the 1st U.S. Dragoons, which he joined in 1855. General Townsend, the officer in charge of escorting Lincoln’s remains on the journey to Springfield recounts his emotions and experiences to his wife. First line: “We have arrived thus far on our mournful journey.”
