    A very wide, slightly elevated panoramic view of the oil field of Signal Hill, facing north and east. There are hundreds of oil rigs, or derricks, across the landscape. Among the oil rigs there are streets of houses, as well as numerous vacant lots. There are railroad tracks on the far right side of the image, and in the center, where the last seven tanker cars of a train are visible. Beyond the railroad tracks on the right there is a neighborhood of closely spaced houses without any oil rigs. There is a man walking along the unpaved road just left of center, while a woman watches over two children in a field from the house on the left. There are several widely spaced houses across the landscape, as well as sheds at the base of each derrick.

The neighborhood consists of hundreds of single family homes and small apartment buildings. A few of the houses in the foreground are still under construction, and the streets seem to be unpaved. There are a few automobiles parked on the street in the center of the image, and the street on the right is lined with cars. The entire horizon is lined with the oil derricks of Signal Hill.
