Image of a depiction of the Sutro Baths located in San Francisco, California. Sutro Baths was a complex of multiple public saltwater baths that opened to the general public in 1896 by philanthropist Adolph Sutro. The colorful lithograph is large in size and was printed in four sheets. Images include a row of multiple swimmers lined up along railings, figures performing swimming techniques in water, athletes performing trapeze acts, spectators watching from balconies, and other individuals performing recreational activities in the indoor pool and gymnasium. Building is multiple stories high, with high-vaulted ceilings. Green load-bearing posts and columns hold the structure in place. Green staircases and ladders are depicted in the large complex, along with black and white lamps hanging from the ceiling. Background depiction of the balcony includes decorative green plants and foliage surrounding the space.

A collection of 2786 items from 1853 to 1931, it consists of personal and business correspondence, documents, and maps. Subjects in the collection related to San Francisco include businesses; the Sutro Baths; the Cliff House; land development including Sutro Heights; street railways; politics; and the Sutro Library. There is also material related to mining in Nevada, including the Sutro Mill; the Sutro Tunnel; and the Comstock Lode. Persons represented in the collection include: Edward D. Adams, Pelham W. Ames, Alexander Badlam, Charles A. Clinton, Sarah Brown Ingersoll Cooper, George W. Frink, Carl B. Glasscock, Theodore Krauss, Frank B. Mercer, Emma Merritt, George Moss, James D. Phelan, R.S. Raw, Charles Walter Sutro, Emil S. Sutro, Hugo Sutro, Leah Harris Sutro, and Theodore Sutro. Photographs of the American West, dating from the 1870s to the 1890s, collected by Carl S. Dentzel (1913-1980), director of the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, California, including a disbound album of photographs of Alaska taken by A. L. Broadbent. These views show Revenue Cutter Service ships and officers; Alaskan natives; towns; scenery; the fur trade and mission schools. Other notable photographs in this collection include portraits of John C. Frémont, Harrison Gray Otis, and John A. Sutter; a series of Lake Tahoe card photographs; and views of early western settlers around the time of the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. The collection also depicts Alaskan native graves; missionaries; walrus hunting; whaling ships; totem poles; officers in the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service; vacationers throughout California; the logging industry; Kingston, New Mexico; Greek Orthodox church buildings; the first grand jury in Nome, Alaska; James Gilchrist Swan; and a portrait of one of the collection's photographers, Alfred Lee Broadbent. Photographers who contributed to this collection include William C. Billington, Alfred Lee Broadbent, F. Davey, Edward De Groff, Charles D. Kirkland, D. S. Mitchell, C.H. Shaffner, Julius Ulke, and Raper James Waters.

A personal photograph album of 104 images with handwritten captions chiefly depicting Chester A. Thomas (1874-1920) and Thomas family members between 1892 and 1898 in mining camps in Nevada (pages 1-29); at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California (pages 30-33); visiting Harvard University and Cambridge, Massachusetts (pages 38-49); and at Camp Merritt at the Presidio, San Francisco, in 1898 (pages 33-37 and 50-65). The album includes 20 cyanotype photographs (12.5 x 16.5 cm) of the mining camps in Virginia City and Sutro, Nevada (where Thomas's father, Charles Thomas, was superintendent of the Sutro tunnel), including: mining equipment, miners, locomotive cars, interior views of the mine shaft, buildings and mules. Some of the images are of Camp Merritt, at the Presidio in San Francisco, California, where California volunteers assembled in May-June 1898 for transport to the Philippines during the Spanish American War. Thomas, a member of Company K of the United States Cavalry Volunteers, is depicted as well as other soldiers, including members of the 51st Iowa Volunteers.
