    A collection of material chiefly relating to Edwin A. Bowen's Civil War service and the 52nd Regiment's veterans' association. Included are a Civil War journal kept from November 1861 to February 29, 1864; regimental military records, including general and special orders, communications, dispatches, reports, muster rolls, and ordnance records; drafts and the fair copy of Bowen's "Historical Memoranda of the 52nd Regiment Illinois Infantry Volunteers," (1870s); and accounts of the Battle of Shiloh that Bowen submitted at the request of Shiloh Battlefield Commission (1895). Also included are Bowen's account of his service in New Mexico (1848), an article about slavery (approximately 1861), and the original manuscript, typescript and publication of his Pike's Peak journal (1859).

    Manuscripts

    Autograph album of Lydia Woodworth chiefly containing blank pages with 10 drawings, 1 handwritten piece of music, and 3 manuscript pieces contributed by her friends including members of the Strong family and Charles Warren Stoddard. Consists of: a poem titled "Madrigal" by Charles Warren Stoddard, 1880; an undated unsigned poem in French beginning "Ah! Mademoiselle Lydie! est a bien vous..."; 1880; pen-and-ink sketch of a woman by Joseph D. Strong, 1880; two pages of music, "To Lydia" with "words by J. E. T." and "music by C. T.", February 1879; three pen-and-ink sketches of a woman by Belle Osborne Strong, 1878 and undated; a pen-and-ink sketch of a figure in Chinese costume with a fan by Jules Tavernier; a watercolor of a misty landscape by J. W. Rix; a watercolor of flowers signed E. Williams; an ink-and-watercolor of a human skull, unsigned; an unfinished watercolor of a woman and flowers, unsigned; and a colored sketch of a flying duck by E. N. [McCoy?] . Also includes a note from Austin Strong, son of Joseph and Belle Strong, dated September 1919, identifying the contents as contributions "all from young artists living in San Francisco in the real Bohemia days." The volume is inscribed "Lydia Woodworth, from her dear Friend Jessie Rand, Dec. 25th, 1876."

    Edwin Francis Gay papers, (bulk 1920-1946)

    A collection of 9,601 items from 1786 to 1973, which consists of professional and personal material related to Edwin Francis Gay's life and multifaceted career. The collection documents his career in the civil service, at Harvard University, the New York Evening Post, and the Huntington Library; there are also some papers related to the National Bureau of Economic Research. Subjects include European economic recovery after World War I; international economic relations after World War II; United States business; and Gay's voluminous research notes on European and American economic history. Also included are Gay's notes on the Temple family papers in the Stowe collection at the Huntington Library and correspondence and papers relative to Herbert Heaton's book Scholar in action : Edwin Francis Gay (Cambridge, Harvard University Press, 1952). The collection also includes business, family and personal correspondence, documents, genealogy, printed material, photographs, clippings, and ephemera. Also present is Woodrow Wilson telegram to Edwin Francis Gay, 1919 September 17 (GY 3292) in Box 124.

    This collection contains the papers of Edwin P. Hubble and includes manuscripts and reprints of his articles, papers, public lectures, addresses, etc., scientific documentation for his papers, logbooks of photographic plates taken by Hubble at Mount Wilson and Palomar Observatories, diaries and biographical memoirs of his wife Grace Burke Hubble, professional, personal, and social correspondence, photographs, medals and awards, a scrapbook assembled by Grace Hubble, newspaper clippings, etc.

    Edwin Bliss Hill Papers

    The collection deals primarily with Edwin Bliss Hill's activities as a private printer, as a founder of the Frank Holme Memorial Group, and as a collector of books and manuscripts. There are 274 manuscripts including manuscripts by Hill and Frank Holme; poetry and prose to be printed by Hill; and biographical sketches of Holme. The materials by and about Holme were collected by Hill and others as part of the Memorial Group endeavors. There are 1,807 pieces of correspondence including letters to and from Edwin Bill Hill chiefly about private printing; Hill's press and materials to be printed; the Frank Holme Memorial Group; and Thoreau scholarship, texts, etc. and book and manuscript collection. Emerson, Edward Waldo - letter to Francis Cummins Lockwood about Ralph Waldo Emerson. Forrest, Earle Robert - letters to Hill about Forrest's life as a cowboy and about the book he co-authored with Hill, Lone War Trail of Apache Kid. Hill, Edwin Bliss - list of books printed on his press; and a series of 29 letters and one postcard to Vincent Starrett (1918-1948) discuss Hill's printing and literary pursuits. Holme, Frank - letters written to Oswald Bruce Cooper in 1901, when Holme was away in Asheville, discuss the details of running his School of Illustration. Holme, Ida May (Van Dyke) - correspondence to Hill provides information and dates regarding Frank Holme's life. Jones, Haydon - letter of June 15, 1944, to Hill recalls events in Frank Holme's life. Starrett, Vincent - extensive correspondence with Hill concerning works of his printed by Hill, with enclosures of manuscripts, proofsheets and lay-outs. Yeats, Elizabeth Corbet - correspondence to Hill mentioning various members of the Yeats family and discussing her Cuala Press. Yeats, William Butler - an introductory essay addressed to Lady Gregory, 4 letters to Hill, and one letter to Lily Yeats.

    ----- ----- to Edwin B. Hoffman

    Manuscripts

    The Edwin B. Hoffman collection mostly consists of professional correspondence and records related to Hoffman's career at sea, from 1901-1921. The first series includes accounts, forms, correspondence, financial records, legal documents, photographs, and printed ephemera pertaining to his time at the United States Lighthouse Service and United States Shipping Board. Letters and telegrams detail the loss of P.J. Abler (schooner) in 1915 and the collision of Dorr (schooner) and Oklahoma (schooner) in 1916. Included is a certificate indicating Hoffman was pilot on the first torpedo flotilla aboard the United States Ship Whipple. Most of the correspondence in this series is addressed to Hoffman. The second series includes accounts, certificates, correspondence, documents, logs, manifests, and reports concerning his service as Master of Eastern Leader (steamboat) in 1921. Letters and reports detail an accident to the rudder on 1921 May 26, while undocking in Limerick, Ireland for New York. Most of the letters are typed copies retained by Hoffman addressed to colleagues and family.
