    C.W. Williams collection of early ballooning and parachuting

    The collection contains printed and manuscript material compiled by C.W. Williams related to aeronautics and parachuting in the late 19th century. Contents include: newspaper clippings, several about falls and deaths of aeronauts, promotional broadsides/advertisements for Williams & Young's air show, a letter, pencil sketches of a parachute ascent and descent (probably done by Williams), a scrapbook, and other ephemera and printed items. There is also a 7-page manuscript entitled: "Biography of the World famed aeronaut C.W. Williams...." The scrapbook contains clippings about aeronauts, ballooning, and parachuting; it is in fragile condition and many items are loose.

    These two portfolio boxes contain approximately 200 items that form part of the prints and ephemera of the Huntington Library Aeronautica Collection. The images and texts within this collection include illustrations, diagrams, and descriptions of balloons and parachutes, balloon ascents, descents, and accidents; portraits of aeronauts; and political cartoons and fanciful or documentary pictures that incorporate depictions of balloons, airships, and flying machines. The collection features prints chronicling the progression of early aeronautical history from the first manned balloon ascent launched by French brothers Joseph-Michel Montgolfier and Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier in 1783, to the well-publicized ascents of famed English balloonist Charles Green in the mid 1800s.

    Manuscript cookbook/scrapbook containing handwritten culinary recipes and mounted newspaper clippings and printed ephemera with culinary recipes and general hygiene, medicinal, housekeeping and gardening tips. Handwritten recipes include: Mustard pickle, Emily Bacon's Election Cake, Ham brine, and California Cake. Some clippings are mounted over earlier ledger entries.

    J. Morris Slemons scrapbooks

    These scrapbooks, kept by J. Morris Slemon's contains various material related to his career, especially his publications regarding the field of obstetrics and its history. The first scrapbook contains materials related to J. Morris Slemons's biography of John Whitridge Williams, early 20th century authority on maternity, chief obstetrician of Johns Hopkins Hospital and a former dean of the Johns Hopkins Medical School. The scrapbook contains letters from famous physicians around the United States congratulating the author on his success and commenting on the subject. There are also a few materials related to Slemons's career and other publications. The volume includes eight loose items: one review of the book; one photo; two letters of congratulations; one library card from Los Angeles County Medical Association Library; and three fliers for ordering the book. The second scrapbook contains material related to J. Morris Slemons's interest in maternity and obstetrics and his book The prospective mother. There are newspaper and journal clippings regarding medical anecdotes, mostly regarding maternity and the practice of obstetrics. The scrapbook also contains book reviews of medical works on obstetrics and maternity, including those for his book. A few clippings are in German. He also collected letters written to him regarding his book as well as obituaries of local doctors. The volume includes sixteen loose items including: an airplane ticket to Mexico City; two sets of notes, one of which may be by John Whitridge Williams on obstetrics in the Bible; three clippings; eight letters, one regarding his resignation from a Red Cross Committee, six pertaining to his book, and another pertaining to his essay on book collecting; and two essays, one on book collecting and one on Williams' work.
