The collection consists of letters (including 2 letter books), manuscripts (including 8 diaries), and documents related to Henry Dalton and his life in early Southern California. Of note are land papers and maps related to Dalton's ranches: Rancho Azusa, Rancho Santa Anita, Rancho San Francisquito, Rancho San José, and Rancho Addition. The collection includes 7 volumes detailing the daily occurences at Rancho Azusa (1845-79), 10 memorandum books, 25 account books, 4 Indian books, and 14 banking and receipt books.

Henry Ellsworth Wood papers

The collection contains manuscripts by Henry Ellsworth Wood, letters written by various authors, photographs, negatives, ephemera, an assay book, and photograph albums and scrapbooks. The collection spans several generations of the Wood family, focusing on the personal life and business activities of Henry Ellsworth Wood. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, including some 300 pieces from Henry Ellsworth Wood to his wife, Belle Matteson McGinnis Wood. These letters, composed over the fifty year period of their marriage, cover a wide range of aspects of their lives, including their immediate and extended family, their day-to-day activities, trips to visit family and friends, financial hardships, mining affairs in Colorado and Canada, and assorted business activities. Four generations of the Wood family are represented in the correspondence, including 69 letters composed between 1853 and 1856 by William Cowper Wood, his parents and siblings. The collection includes various drafts of Henry Ellsworth Wood's reminiscences of his childhood and early days in Leadville, the most comprehensive manuscript of this type being "I Remember." Also of note is the manuscript "Colorado in 1868," reproduced with commentary by Henry Ellsworth Wood from a notebook kept by his father, William Cowper Wood, during the 1868 John Wesley Powell expedition. The collection contains one assay book kept by Maurice Hayes between the years 1873 and 1878. Maurice Hayes arrived at Leadville no later than 1873, serving as one of the first assayers in the area and many early Leadville notables are entered in this record book. There are also several scrapbooks and photograph albums, approximately 1868 to approximately 1921.

Henry Mauris Robinson papers, (bulk 1917-1937)

A collection of approximately 970 items from 1862 to 1946, it consists of the professional, political, business and personal papers and correspondence of Henry Mauris Robinson. The main focus of the collection is his work with the President's Second Industrial Conference, Bituminous Coal Commission, President's Conference on Unemployment, and his involvement in the presidential campaign of Herbert Hoover in 1920. The correspondence includes carbon copies of his outgoing correspondence and signed first copies of letters addressed to him. Correspondents include Harry A. Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Herbert N. Shenton, Joseph P. Tumulty, and others. Also included is a group of 25 Civil War letters of Henry Robinson's father, George Foreman Robinson who enlisted for three months in Company F., 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Upon expiration of the term, he re-enlisted as 1st Sergeant of Company F., 80th Ohio Infantry, rising to the ranks of Lieutenant and then Captain. He took part in the Northern Mississippi Campaign, including battles of Yuka, Corinth, and Vicksburg. He was wounded and taken prisoner at Missionary Ridge and was honorably discharged as a paroled prisoner of war in 1865. Letters were posted from February 1862 to early October 1864 from Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and South Carolina, including some items written during the siege of Vicksburg. The letters are addressed mainly to his sister, Emma H. Robinson and discuss camp life, military operations, war news, and war politics. The collection also includes certificates, printed material, and ephemera.

A collection of approximately 437 items from 1826 to 1950, it consists of the professional, political, and personal correspondence and papers of Charles Henry Ray; chiefly letters addressed to him. Included are letters discussing family news; Ray's studies of medicine in New York; the whaling voyage from 1841 to 1843 onboard the New Bedford whaler Newton; early medical practice in Illinois; business affairs; the Chicago Tribune; the Chicago Evening Post; his involvement in the trade with the South during the Civil War. Also, contemporary politics, including the Republican party, the Lincoln presidency and the Civil War. Correspondents include Levi Ray, Jane Yates Per Lee Ray, Julia Annah Clark Ray, Harvey Hubbard, William M. Fenton, Serranus Clinton Hastings, Tench S. Fairchild, Charles S. Hempstead, James Wilson Grimes, Joseph Medill, Henry Martyn Smith, Lyman Trumbull, Elihu Benjamin Washburne, Horace White, and others. Also included are newspaper clippings of the obituaries of Charles H. Ray, and photographs and portraits of Ray and his second wife. The collection also includes additional family and political letters and a manuscript of "Charles H. Ray and the Chicago Tribune."

Henry David Cooke papers, (bulk 1846-1881)

A collection containing 169 items; mssHM 47644-47748: Personal and professional correspondence of Henry D. Cooke. Included are the correspondence, deeds, bonds, agreements, contracts, accounts, and other financial and business records. The correspondence with Laura S. Humphreys Cooke and John Sherman constitute two larger groups of letters. Other correspondents include James Gillespie Blaine, Salmon Portland Chase, Jay Cooke, William Tecumseh Sherman, and Julia Dent Grant. The letters cover Cooke's travels in Panama and Chile, life in California (including news of the gold discovery), his political activities, business interests, and family matters. Also included are: a political cartoon entitled "The exhausted receiver," by J.P. Davis and S. Peer, Cyrus West Field's proposal on "the establishment of a submarine telegraph communication between the West coast of America and the eastern shores of Russia, China, etc." addressed to Alexander II, Emperor of Russia, and a contract and specifications for an organ for St. John Episcopal Church in Georgetown (1870) commissioned by Cooke to Henry Erben. The ephemera contains visiting cards, invitations, receipts, tax forms, stock certificates, etc. There is also the 1956 correspondence of his grandson Henry Dave Cook with Leslie Edgar Bliss, the Librarian of the Huntington Library, regarding possible acquisition of Henry D. Cooke's papers.

A collection of 108 items from 1840-1918, which contains personal and business correspondence as well as government records pertaining to the emerging mining industry in California. The collection includes legal and governmental records such as agreements, bills and receipts, bills of sale, deeds, a deposition, homestead claims, land indentures, an insurance policy, mine maps, mine reports, notices of location, a land protest, and a Water Appropriation Notice. Because Henry Vail created and stored these records, his outgoing letters are not included in this collection. Additionally, some of the discussions are fragmented or may have long periods of silence within the surviving material.
