Included are statements by José Antonio Pico, Tiburcio Tapĩa, Juan María Osuna, Andres Pico and the grant by Mexican governor of Alta California, Juan Bautista Alvarado.

Moreno, José Matías. Letter to Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, 1808-1890

Boxes 1-17 consist mainly of correspondence, documents, and manuscripts to and from José Matías Moreno. Some subjects include the history of his Rancho Guadalupe in northern Baja California; politics in Baja California and American economic and political influence there; filibustering; ranchos and land sales; commerce and shipping along the California coast; mining; and the social and domestic history of the Californios. Boxes 23-26 consist of additional oversize correspondence, documents, and manuscripts at the end of the collection. Note: At the end of Box 15, there are facsimiles, translations, and a group of loose notes and fragments. The notes and fragments appear to be a working translation. These folders do not have an HLG call number.

Abel Stearns papers
Manuscripts
Professional and personal papers of Abel Stearns, including correspondence, business records, legal documents, and other manuscripts. The materials in the collection deal with life in California during the Mexican and early statehood periods, including the cattle industry, ranching, real estate, political and social life, and the gold discoveries in Southern California in 1842. Correspondents include Juan Bandini, Cave Johnson Couts, Tomas Eleuterio Estenaga, John Forster, Thomas Oliver Larkin, Perfecto Hugo Reid, Alfred Robinson, and others. Also included are diaries kept in 1879-1905 by Juan Bautista Bandini, son of Juan Bandini, who lived in the Santa Monica area. The collection also contains a group of papers accumulated by John Tracy Gaffey, third husband of Mrs. Abel Stearns. The Gaffey papers contain correspondence, including letters from Stephen Mallory White, papers relating to San Pedro, California and historical sketches. There are also papers related to María Victoria Bartoloméa Comecrabit Reid.

James Clyman papers, (bulk 1827-1846)

The collection contains 52 items and includes letters and receipts about Clyman's service in the Black Hawk War (1832-1835), receipts and promissory notes from the business operations of Clyman and Arnett in Danville, Illinois (1832-1840). The collection also includes nine volumes of diaries describing Clyman's travels to, life in, and return from Oregon and California (1844-1846) and an 1871 diary kept in Napa, California. Also included is one letter from Henry Dodge (1832) and another letter from Stephen Watts Kearny (1834).
