Alfred Harrison Joy Papers

The collection consists of the professional papers of American astronomer Alfred Harrison Joy (1882-1973). It includes both incoming and copies of going correspondence (3 boxes) and research files (manuscripts, lectures, notebooks, etc.) related to Joy's study of stellar radial velocities, variable stars, T Tauri stars, and galactic structure. Correspondents include: Helmut A. Abt, Ansel Adams, Robert Grant Aitken, George Ellery Hale, George Howard Herbig, Helen Sawyer Hogg, Gerard Peter Kuiper, Willem Jacob Luyten, Beverly T. Lynds, Paul W. Merrill, Thornton Page, Miroslav Plavec, Frederick Hanley Seares, and Alexander N. Vyssotsky. There is also an extensive amount of material related to Joy's involvement with the American Astronomical Society and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in the collection. Correspondence (Boxes 1-3) The correspondence includes both incoming letters and outgoing carbon copies. They are arranged in folders alphabetically by named correspondent or subject. The correspondence files are listed alphabetically according to the last name of the correspondent or, in some cases, to the first word of the subject heading. If a particular correspondent has less than three items associated with him or her, then these have been placed in the "Miscellaneous Correspondence" files at the end. In the list for each file is noted the correspondent's name, the years covered by the letters, the number of items in the file, and any extra comments are in brackets below each entry. Astronomical working papers (Boxes 4-6) The working papers are arranged in folders alphabetically according to their subject. Talks and papers (Box 7) These are arranged in folders chronologically according to when they were given or published. Undated items are placed at the end of the series. Society material (boxes 7-8) This series contains printed programs of conferences and minutes of meetings for the American Astronomical Society and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. The folders are arranged chronologically within each society. Photographs (Box 8) There are a few folders at the end of Box 8 which contain three dozen photographs, mainly of stellar spectra. Notebooks and reprints (Boxes 9-10) This series contains various record and note books. Included here are his notes from Henry Norris Russell's classes and a list of his published papers. Includes one volume of bound reprints published by Joy in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (1917-1932)

Nathan W. Stowell Papers

The collection consists primarily of field notes, maps, and business records related to Nathan W. Stowell and his land development and irrigation interests in the Cucamonga area, Los Angeles, and the Imperial Valley. Included are copies of the field notes from Los Angeles area surveyors Henry Hancock, George Hansen, and William P. Reynolds from the 1850s to the 1870s, as well as copies of maps and plats from the Cucamonga and Los Angeles areas. Business records include seven volumes consisting of deeds, articles of incorporation, and lawsuits related to Stowell's interests in the Cucamonga Company, the Cucamonga Water Company, the Cucamonga Fruit Land Company, and the Cucamonga Water Company. Most of these volumes include an index listing the individuals and corporations that are included. Subjects in the collection include: history of Southern California business enterprises and capitalists, irrigation, real estate development, and real property. Individuals who appear in the collection include the land and irrigation developer George Chaffey, Imperial Valley developer C. R. Rockwood, and the surveyor William Rich Hutton. The Southern Pacific Railroad Company and the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Los Angeles also appear as subjects in the collection. Also included are documents relating to the court cases N. W. Stowell vs. Rialto Irrigation District, California Development Co. vs. Imperial Land Co., et al, and J. B. McPherson, et. al vs. Cucamonga Fruit Land Co. There are 14 oversize items, including 12 maps, Field Notes by Henry Hancock, and a rolled Tabulation of Measurements of Water Development at Red Hills, Cucamonga.

The Homer D. Crotty papers and addenda are one unified collection of papers with two separate organizational schemes. The Homer D. Crotty papers were organized in accordance to the original order as received by The Huntington Library and without any series designations. The papers consists primarily of Homer D. Crotty's business and organization papers, including agreements, bylaws, clippings, correspondence, financial records, insurance records, invitations, lists, memorandums, minutes, notes, pamphlets, photos, programs, receipts, reports, speeches, tax records, time sheets, typescripts, and writings. The papers also include a small amount of education and personal records. The addenda is organized into three series: 1) Personal papers 2)Organizations 3)Oversize Personal papers include records related to the personal lives of Homer and Ida Crotty, such as correspondence, book catalogs, birth certificates, death certificates, diaries, passports, photos, notebooks, speeches, travel ephemeral, and writings. This series is arranged alphabetically by genre. Organization records document the creators' participation in various clubs, charities, legal associations, and nonprofit organizations. This series is arranged alphabetically by organization name. Oversize items include architectural drawings, lecture notes, letter books (correspondence), photos, prints, and textbooks. This series is arranged by item size.

The collection consists of letters, documents, and maps, including 14 bound volumes, related to the business affairs (1898-1923) of Conway S. Campbell-Johnson and A. Campbell-Johnson, the sons of Alexander Robert Campbell-Johnson. The collection includes property titles, cattle records, property annexation agreements with the city of Pasadena, right-of-way agreements with the Pacific Electric Railway Company, and records of the Church of the Angels in Highland Park, Calif.
