    The majority of the twenty-nine volumes contain mining journal entries, company reports, financial accounting, and correspondence documented by John Daniell, Sr. during his time at Copper Falls Mine, the Osceola Mine, Allouez Mine, and Cliff Mine located in the Great Lakes region in Houghton County, Michigan. Daniell also recorded his travels, mine assessments, copper stock values and insider speculation, along with personal accounts of daily life. The final three volumes (27-29) document John Daniell, Jr.'s employment with the Finnish American Mining Company (Calumet, Michigan) and J.H. & W.B. Millard Mines and Mining (Virginia City, Montana) through his detailed correspondence.

    The collection consists of letters, documents, and bound volumes documenting the legal and business affairs of the Savage Mining Company and the Hale and Norcross Mining Company. It includes receipts and disbursements, payrolls, bank books, time books, stockholders' statements and accounts, reports on ore extracted, and assays, vouchers, etc. The collection also includes letters to mining superintendents, a few pertaining to the mining town of Bodie, California, and some material concerning operations of the U.S. Mint in Carson City, Nevada, from 1888 to 1889.
