    The Mary Hallock Foote papers consist of forty letters and one manuscript sent by Foote to Century Magazine from 1886 through approximately 1902. The letters, some of which are addressed to Richard Watson Gilder, are mostly about publishing her own work, although a few discuss the struggle to unionize mines, especially in Idaho. The manuscript included is the short story "The Rapture of Hetty." Also included are one letter from Clarence Buel to Gilder and one letter from Gilder to Mr. Carey.

    The James D. Hague papers consist of correspondence, 46 letter books, manuscripts, diaries, notebooks, field books, documents, photographs, maps and drawings. Subject matter includes the family and business affairs of James D. Hague and mining, including the South Sea Expedition of 1858 to 1861, the Calumet and Hecla copper mines in Michigan from 1863 to 1914, and other mining companies in the Western U.S. and in Mexico. Also included in the collection are a few drawings and letters of Mary Hallock Foote; materials related to James D. Hague's father, Rev. William Hague (1808-1887); and Prince Heinrich of Prussia's visit to the United States in 1902. Persons represented in the collection include: Henry Adams, Ellsworth Daggett, William Earl Dodge, Samuel Franklin Emmons, Stuyvesant Fish, James T. Gardiner, James Ben Ali Haggin, Arnold Hague, Edward Everett Hale, Edward Henry Harriman, Henry Holt, Edwin J. Hulbert, Henry Janin, Louis Janin, John La Farge, Raphael Pumpelly, George Haven Putnam, Rossiter W. Raymond, Edmund Clarence Stedman, John Tyndall, Henry Villard, and Stanford White. Mining companies represented in the collection include the Calumet and Hecla Consolidated Copper Company, the New Almaden Mining Company, and the North Star Mines Company.

    A collection of correspondence, documents, and maps related to the Walking Purchase and the Councils of Easton retained by the office of Pennsylvania's governor William Denny (in office from August 1756 to October 1759). The bulk of the collection consists of the records of the Council of Easton (August 1757) and the inquiry into the legality of the Walking Purchase authorized by Denny. It contains affidavits, sworn testimony, exhibits, memorandum, correspondence, and notes; this material includes original documents dating back to the time of the fraudulent land deal as well as some military correspondence. The collection also includes several documents and letters concerning Native American troubles on the frontier in the 1740s, along with their protests to the Proprietors over rum being sold to their people. Important persons in the collection include, among others, William Allen, Benjamin Chew, George Croghan, William Denny, Benjamin Franklin, James Hamilton, William Markham, Israel Pemberton, Thomas Penn, Richard Peters, Nicholas Scull, Teedyuscung (Delaware Chief), George Thomas, and Conrad Weiser. Almost all of the material in the collection is docketed and bears the initials or signatures of W. H. Rolph, followed by hyphenated numbers. The collection also contains oversize material and a small group of 20th century newspaper clippings about the Walking Purchase and the material in this collection.

    A collection of eleven (11) envelopes of materials relating to or about puppetry and marionettes, ranging in date from 1928 to 1940, all collected or authored by Mabel Spofford. There are approximately 60 pieces within this box . Env. 1 contains 2 newspaper clippings about a marionette performance, circa 1930. Env. 2 contains 4 flyers from the New England Puppetry Institute, dated 1938. Env. 3 contains 2 flyers about marionettes and puppetry. Env. 4 contains 2 informational flyers regarding performances by the Fuller Studios (North Quincy, Massachusetts) and The Forrest Marionettes (Fitchburg, Massachusetts), circa 1940. Env. 5 contains 5 flyers, notices and newsletters from the Kingsland Marionettes of New York; some of the flyers are notices of their summer workshops in Brandon, Vermont. These items range in date from 1937 to 1940. Env. 6 contains 2 leaves (an article) removed from a 1937 issue of Look magazine about marionettes. Env. 7 contains 3 pieces. The first is an article from a magazine entitled "Marionettes in the Home" by Howard L. White. The second is 2 typescript pages of notes; the third is a color image, removed from a magazine, of 5 male faces. Env. 8 contains 6 pieces, which include typescript pages about stage plays and lighting of stage plays, a marionette performance invitation, a publisher's advertisement, and a program for the Twelfth Annual Conference of Supervisors and Teachers of Art at the Massachusetts School of Art, February 1935. Env. 9 contains 4 typescript pages and 1 envelope from the New England Puppetry Institute, sponsored by the Curry School of Expression. Env. 10 contains approximately 30 pieces of manuscript notes and newspaper clippings and printed items, including drawings and plans of puppets, all relating to various puppetry shows and performances. Env. 11 contains a 1933 exhibition catalog entitled Exhibition of Puppets and Marionettes with a note on Puppetry in America, by Paul McPharlin, held in Chicago from July-September 1933. It is 24 pages in length, and is illustrated. "Katharine Daniels, 1933" is written in ms., in ink, on the front cover. Title supplied by cataloger.
