A compilation of conversations between Dunstan Thompson and his partner, Philip Trower. These are extracts from Trower's diary between 1969 and 1973; the conversations took place at The Lodge, Cley (in Norfolk), and on their daily drives. Also enclosed: autograph note by Trower and an earlier version of "Conversations."

Thompson Webb papers, (bulk 1905-1974)

A collection of approximately 30,000 items from 1798 to 1995, it contains the personal, professional and business papers of educator Thompson Webb (1887-1975) and his wife, Vivian Louise Howell Webb. The letters, manuscripts and documents in the collection concern education, especially the Webb School in Claremont, California; agriculture in the Coachella Valley and Riverside; the town of Claremont, California; and religious organizations. There is also material about the other Webb Schools in Bell Buckle and Knoxville, Tennessee; Scripps College; The Claremont Colleges; and Pilgrim Place, Claremont, California. The collection also includes copies of 56 letters from 1859 to 1862 of Daniel L. Clary, a student who joined the Confederate Army not long after the beginning of the United States Civil War and who died from battle wounds. There is also a significant amount of Webb family correspondence in the collection, in addition to the papers of Thompson Webb's father-in-law, a Los Angeles area minister named Robert Paine Howell. Persons represented in the collection include: Marshall Stimson, Jerry Voorhis, William Robert "Swaney" Webb, Thompson Webb, Thompson Webb (1917-1998), Vivian Louise Howell Webb, William Robert Webb (1874-1960), William Robert Webb (active 1947-1962), and William Robert Webb (1921-). Included in the collection are 10 boxes of minimally processed addenda.

The collection consists of business papers and correspondence related to the the Banning Company and its subsidiaries, particularly the Santa Catalina Island Company, as well as personal papers and correspondence created by members of the Banning, Patton, Glassell, Shorb, Thornton, and Thompson families. The business correspondence primarily focuses on the Bannings, and includes references to professional conflicts among the Banning brothers, the Santa Catalina Island Company, the Wilmington Transportation Company, the San Gabriel Wine Company, Mormon Island and surrounding areas, financial issues, and land sales. There are also 20 letters written between Henry E. Huntington and George S. Patton (1856-1927) from 1903-1905, and which relate to land in the San Marino area. The personal correspondence consists of letters between members of the Banning, Patton, Glassell, Shorb, Thornton, and Thompson families written in Alabama, California, Georgia, Virginia, and West Virginia. Family correspondents include Ellen Banning Ayer, Frederick Ayer, Anne Ophelia Smith Banning, Hancock Banning (1865-1925), Joseph Brent Banning, Katharine Stewart Banning, Lucy Tichenor Banning, May Alice Banning, Mary Hollister Banning, Phineas Banning, William Banning, Ynez Shorb Buck, Eliza Thompson Fry, Cornelia Fry, Charle Gibbs, E. Santa Catalina Island Co. business records include annual statements, notes on a potential sheep farming business, records of the steamers "Cabrillo" and "Hermosa," memorandum on management and policies, land papers, and receipt books. Some materials also relate to the Catalina Yacht Club. Items related to Catalina Island in general include advertising ephemera, a scrapbook, copies of magazine articles, and miscellaneous printed materials. Also included in the collection are various newspaper clippings, printed items, and ephemera.
