- Provenance
- Gifts of George B. Stoneman, MD, June 2016, and April 2021. Most of General Stoneman's personal and military papers were either lost during the Civil War or burned in a house fire at "Los Robles" while Stoneman was governor of California. Mary Oliver Hardisty Stoneman is evidently the one who preserved most or all of the early material in this collection. After her death, her granddaughter Virginia Stoneman (1902-1980) became the family historian and assembled most of the later material pertaining to the Stoneman children and grandchildren, as well as conducting her own research. George B. Stoneman, MD, is the nephew of Virginia Hardisty Stoneman.
