    A collection of manuscripts, correspondence and ephemera relating to Dwight Chichester Smith's work on Robert Browne (1550?-1633), English churchman and theologian. The manuscripts include Smith's Ph.D. thesis and a biography of Browne; the correspondence relates to Smith's efforts to publish the biography, and the ephemera includes a photograph of Smith, reading room tickets, and printed commencement material from Smith's graduation from the University of Edinburgh in 1936.

    The collection has several strong subject points for the purpose of research including journalism and the writing process and the history of Los Angeles. There are many letters written during World War II that discuss life in America as well as abroad, especially Iwo Jima. The bulk of the collection includes correspondence to Smith from his readers, many of whom were persons of note, and Smith's own subject files of topics often discussed in his columns. The manuscripts include a number of Smith's notebooks as well as drafts of essays and monographs. The ephemera includes appearances of Smith's columns, photographs of Smith's work and family, and printed materials related to Smith's work and family life.

    Charles Dwight Willard papers

    A collection of 749 items from 1878 to 1913, which consists of letters, manuscripts, a diary, documents and photographs related to the life and business activities of Charles Dwight Willard. Much of the collection relates to family matters and Willard's college career at the University of Michigan from 1879 to 1883. There is also material about the Los Angeles Herald, approximately 1889 to 1890, the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, approximately 1891 to 1895, the Land of Sunshine magazine, approximately 1894, and the railroad strike of 1894. Of note in the collection are 12 letters from Theodore Roosevelt to Willard concerning politics written between 1911 and 1913.

    Frank Dwight Baldwin papers

    A collection of professional, personal, and family papers of General Frank D. Baldwin. The collection includes Baldwin's correspondence, military papers, maps, notebooks, diaries, photographs, scrapbooks, and ephemera. The correspondence includes both letters by Baldwin and addressed to him from 1869 to 1920, and deals mostly with his promotions, friends, and the men who served under his command. The military papers include Baldwin's military records, orders, reports, and communications, which cover his post-Civil War career, recommendations for promotions, and papers relating to his Medals of Honor. Also included is correspondence from 1914 to 1915 relating to a motion picture about the last battles and surrender of Native Americans to Gen. Nelson A. Miles; an incomplete autobiography that starts with General Baldwin's Civil War service and ends in 1879; a group of facsimiles of letters by John Brown; and a program of the memorial service for Owen Brown. The papers also include an addenda which contains the correspondence between Frank D. Baldwin and his wife Alice Blackwood Baldwin, his daughter Juanita Baldwin Williams-Foote, and other members of the Baldwin family. Also included is Baldwin's professional and personal correspondence, military papers, official correspondence, telegrams, maps, pictures, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, pocket diaries, and appointment books from 1860 to 1923.
