    Correspondence and documents

    Manuscripts

Series includes letters written by and to multiple generations of the Pearse family. The letters detail the lives of English nonconformists which centered around the family and church. The subjects include family news, marriages, deaths, illness, medicine, religion, political news and events such as the fire at Whitehall in 1697/98. The letters are in relatively good condition with some damage but little loss of text. The documents include an ordination certificate, wills and probate, and a 1724 graduation certificate with an attached wax seal in a tin case; the certificate can be unfolded but the tin case should not be opened until the fragile seal can be conserved.

Series includes both printed and manuscript bound volumes written by Pearse family members and others. The volumes include commonplace books, sermons, hymn texts, notes on sermons, church attendance and taking of the Lord's Supper, nonconformist church history, and natural philosophy. A number of the volumes were written by Agnis Pearse or contain her notes or additions. Some of the volumes are in poor condition with missing or loose spines, covers and pages but the contents are in good condition given the age and use.
