    The collection includes the Civil War letters of George D. Patten and William B. Patten to their mother Sarah S. Patten and sister Hannah, and a pocket diary of William B. Patten, 1864. There are letters from Sarah S. Patten to her sons, a photograph album, and miscellaneous envelopes from the Civil War era. The letters from George D. Patten to his mother are posted from various places in Iowa, Louisiana, and Virginia, between January 1864 and December 1865, and cover the Red River Campaign, including the advance from Franklin to Alexandria, Battle of Sabine Cross Roads (or Battle of Mansfield), Pleasant Hill, Cane River Crossing, and Alexandria; encampment in Morganza, expedition from Morganza to the Atchafalaya, and Fort Madisonville; and Sheridan's Shenandoah campaigns including the Battle of Winchester, September 1864.

    Letters from George H. Mellish to his parents posted from various places in Virginia and Maryland from 1862 to 1865. Also included are letters from his mother Mary Mellish, from 1864 to 1865. Mellish's letters home contain accounts and discussions of the military operation in the Eastern front from 1862 to 1865, the Battle of Fredericksburg, Burnside's second campaign (Mud March), duty in New York, military operations at Salem Heights, Bristoe, Rappahannock Station, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna River, Cold Harbor, Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Appomattox campaign, and march to and duty at Danville. He writes about camp life in Virginia, Maryland, and New York, the commanding officers, war news and politics, including McClellan's presidential bid and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. His letters also contain brief discussions about escaped enslaved people and news of a female soldier in the 20th New York Infantry Regiment. Letters of Mary Mellish to her son discuss family matters and news from Woodstock, Vermont.

    Small group of letters, chiefly from Benjamin W. Topping to his sister and mother while he was away during the American Civil War from 1862 to 1864. In these letters, Topping mentions his experience in Army camps, rebel prisoners and deserters, the Battle of Fredericksburg, and African American troops. Several of his letters are written from St. Aloysius General Hospital in Washington, D.C. The rest of the material contains various letters by other family members and friends. There are also photographs of Topping.
