There are 12 volumes of general notes, many from classes she attended at Andover Seminary and from reading she did in homeopathic medicine and mental healing. There are also 98 sermons, some complete and other in outline, accompanied by an index; 18 manuscripts, including an article on boarding-house life; and several miscellaneous notes and copies of manuscripts. There is one letter written by Emma Newman and 14 letters addressed to her. There are assorted other items including some fragmentary biographical material and ephemera.

  At the end of Box 4 are three notebooks, two dating from the 1890s and one from the 1930s, and 2 diaries (appointment books) from the 1940s. Continuing in Box 5 are folders containing fragmentary writings and notes, both prose and verse, various scratchpads with notes and sketches, and the typescript of Charles' novel Thais Thayer (c. 1916), as well as a typescript of an essay entitled "Symbolism" (1932).

  Manuscripts

  The Mary Emily Foy papers consist of personal correspondence and papers from 1879 to 1966. It contains a significant amount of material on the Foy family (including her father, Samuel Calvert Foy), and there is also correspondence from her sister, Cora Foy. The collection also contains papers related to various organizations in which Mary Emily Foy was active, including: the Democratic Party, First Century Families, Ina Coolbrith Circle, Ladies' Adams Street Women's Investment Company, Los Angeles Women's Symphony Orchestra, and the Women's Democratic League. Of note in the collection is some correspondence and manuscripts, including four poems by poet Ina Donna Coolbrith (1841-1928). There are also family photographs, newspaper clippings, ephemera, and a financial volume belonging to Mary Foy.
