A collection of 161 items from 1776 to 1815; it consists of the professional, personal, and political papers and correspondence of James McHenry. The bulk of the collection consists of letters addressed to McHenry during his term as the Secretary of War, from 1796 to 1800. Also included are: petitions to Sir William Howe and report to George Washington concerning the condition of American prisoners of war (1776 to 1777); a regimen and diet prescribed by him to Alexander Hamilton (1778); correspondence and documents relating to the American Revolution accumulated by McHenry during his service as Washington's secretary (1778 to 1780); and Lafayette's aid (1780 to 1781), including a journal that McHenry kept in July 10-15, 1778 en route with Washington's Army to the North River.

Letters, reports, memorials, returns, etc., cover the 1758 campaign of the British army in North America during the Seven Years' War, specifically: the embargo on colonial shipping, the fall of Fort William Henry, the surrender of Louisburg, the expedition against Fort Ticonderoga, the conquest of Fort Frontenac (Cadaraqui), John Forbes's expedition against Fort Duquesne, British use of and relations with the Indians, the internal affairs of the British army, and the recall of Abercromby.

The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, legal instruments, plans, surveys, appraisals, accounts and other documents related to the Growden legacy; including the shares in Durham Iron Works, the properties in Durham, Bensalem, and Richland Townships, an upper lot of the Delaware River, and houses in Philadelphia. The materials cover the 1773 partition of the Growden's estates and their fate after Pennsylvania Act of Attainder (1778) and the death of Joseph Galloway. Correspondents include: Joseph Galloway, his brother-in-law Thomas Nickelson and their Philadelphia representatives Abel James and John Thompson; Nickelson's sons-in-law Ellis Button Metford and John Jeffery; Grace Galloway's granddaughter Ann Grace Roberts Burton. John Thompson's grandson John James Thompson (1815-1875), and others.
